Hiccups- should I worry?

Hi guys

I’m posting here because it’s the weekend and hard to get in touch with my MWs unless it’s an emergency, and I don’t know if I’m overreacting.

I’m 33wks pregnant, had a check up on Monday, all was good. This week she has been moving a lot- big (sore!) movements- rolls, kicks, jabs, pinging my ribs etc. 😂

Up until yesterday I had felt hiccups maybe 3 times in total (first time around 20ish weeks I think- I felt movement first at 18). Yesterday though she seemed to have hiccups 3 times. And now, at 11am, she’s had them 2 times today.

I’ve got it in my head she could have the cord wrapped and has restricted blood flow. I am a worrier so I’m looking for reassurance. There is nothing to suggest an issue on the NHS website info.

Thank you in advance xx

Hi I haven’t experienced it this pregnancy but in the previous one ds always seemed to have hiccups. I never thought of the cord being around the neck, but if your worried I would phone your mw xxx

Phone up the hospital if you are worried

My first had hiccups all the time when I was pregnant, it never occurred to me to worry about it. He was quite refluxy as a baby.

Hi thanks PPs I mentioned in my first message MWs not available on normal line as it’s the weekend and hospital is for emergency only- I don’t want to time waste or be overly anxious as I know I can be.

Thanks @BananaPlant hope the reflux isn’t too bad?

Oh he was terrible with reflux! He’s a lovely healthy 8 year old now though so luckily it was a while ago now, although still very much in my memory!

I think it’s pretty normal. I don’t remember feeling it when I was pregnant, but DD had hiccups several times a day for the first few months of her life.

Mine hiccuped daily in the womb & is now a hiccuppy baby (no diagnosed reflux though). Is it an indicator of any issues re the cord? Never heard anything like that before, & when hiccups were noted by my midwife she never mentioned anything like that. Go for a walk & see if she nods off

monkeyted · 18/04/2020 11:52

I had a very hiccuppy baby with my first pregnancy - some days just once, some days five or more times, with the frequency increasing as pregnancy progressed. She had them a lot after birth too. It was just her, not a sign of a problem.

It’s usually not dangerous for the cord to be around the neck and around 30% of deliveries involve a nuchal cord.

daydreamdaisy · 18/04/2020 12:17

So weird I've been having the same worry - 32+6 and in the last week or so baby seems to have hiccups two or three times a day!
From what I can tell though, it's usually fine and when I mentioned it to my midwife she didn't bat an eyelid. I also had a scan on Wednesday and they checked cord as part of that so sure they would have said if any issues?
Mine actually has hiccups right now Hmm if baby is moving fine I'd just call midwife on Monday for reassurance

Thanks everyone, I am feeling quite a lot better after your messages x

My first had hiccups constantly - she came out hiccuping!

quarantinevibes · 18/04/2020 12:55

@BananaPlant that’s interesting as my ds had constant hiccups and very bad reflux when he was born. Didn’t have it with the other pregnancies and they didn’t have reflux x
