metal cot- ever used one?

My MIL has offered us a cot- great news- expect that it turns out that it is made of metal, not wood like I expected. Apparently it's a seventies design classic, in which all three of her sons (including DH!) were happily raised. No-one can understand why I am unsure about this gift- won't a baby hurt itself chewing on the bars? Anyone ever used a metal cot and can advise? Am I being unreasonable?

Oh god no!!! The bars won't be close enough together, it will probably have lead paint. Say no or take it to the tip once she's gone!

I agree, if its old, its probably lead paint. They wernt as safe as they are now.

it is advised not to use old cots i know nothing happened to her children being in it but it was probably new then and not sitting around for 30 yrs i wouldn't feel safe using it

lookon e bay you can find them cheap on ther if in need and say that you have been offered another and not wanting to offend her but due to health risks of old metal cots i wouldn't use it tough one though as she'll probably feel hurt but rather that than any problems with baby

only once, was a cot provided in a hotel on holidays. it was awful- bars are all cold aswell,so when DS rolled over he wasn't pleased!

PregnantGrrrl · 14/09/2007 13:45

perhaps you can save her feelings by suggesting she keep it at her house for when your child visits her?

mumzyof2 · 14/09/2007 15:08

The baby would still have to sleep in it then though, I dont think it would be safe.

Used one on holiday
It was crappy and had screws missing
Generally unsafe
Avoid!

thanks for your advice. you're right, you're all right. It is just so difficult to resist these things when everyone makes it you're a neurotic new mum-to-be. It's good to have MNetters on my side!

now MIL has moved onto trying to offload two bookcases and a standard lamp onto us (sigh)

maybe introduce MIL to freecycle

The line 'my house will be crammed with baby related crap in a few months so no thanks' may well become your mantra
