Fibroid defected at scan

Luckyme30 · 17/04/2020 14:44

I had my dating scan today and the Sonographers thinks I may have a fibroid.

Has anyone had one during pregnancy? She seemed to think it was not an issue at the moment, just wondered if anyone else has had one and If it changed anything with your care during pregnancy?

Hi, just to say that they also said I had one at 12 weeks on the scan - didn’t seem bothered after all. I’m currently 14 +2 so cant really give you any advice about whether or not it will affect your pregnancy but just to say I wasn’t given the impression that it’s something to worry about.

GrandTheftWalrus · 17/04/2020 15:43

They found a few on mine last time. Didn't affect anything but gave me an answer as to why I had extremely heavy periods.

Luckyme30 · 17/04/2020 15:58

Thank you both, that’s reassuring to know. She said she wasn’t going to diagnose it just yet but she suspects that’s what it is.

When I got my scan she said there are fibroids there, did you know? And I replied no but i had been getting investigated for them so i wasnt surprised they were there.

I had no trouble during pregnancy, no bleeding etc

Luckyme30 · 19/04/2020 06:28

@GrandTheftWalrus thank you! Did they cause you any pain?

She mentioned to me that they can cause some pain and I have had lots of aches and pains - nothing too worrying and I put it down to just being pregnant.

Not that I can remember. I'm only 6wks this time and just normal pains so far.

JenNtonic · 19/04/2020 11:03

Hi op! 😁 hope you're well. This happened to me at my 12 week scam too. First she asked if I had very heavy periods and I said no not especially, why? Then she said she could see a "fibroid family". As a PP said, she wasn't worried at all, nothing was mentioned again and all was well 👶🏽 congratulations as well xx

Luckyme30 · 19/04/2020 11:09

Thank you both :) that’s reassuring to know :) I won’t worry about it then

Yes I did. One was quite big but they said it wasnt interfering with the pregnancy. I has a medically advised caesarean and asked could they remove them then but they said no.
I got pregnant within a year of giving birth and they never even mentioned my fibroids that time.
I think many women have them and they can be harmless.

Tillyscoutsmum · 19/04/2020 11:25

Hi there

I had numerous fibroids. The largest was 12cm in diameter. I had one around 8cm and then lots of smaller ones. They were discovered when I had my third miscarriage (always around 6 weeks when the egg tried to attach and couldn't because a fibroid was in the way). When pregnant for the 5th time, the egg managed to attach in a place that didn't have a fibroid. I was checked/scanned regularly and told I was unlikely to go full term because there wouldn't be enough room in there for all the huge fibroids and a full term baby. My consultants words were "I'll be amazed if you go beyond 32 weeks!" We geared up for a small premature baby. DD was eventually born the day before her due date weighing 9lb 12oz 😱 She'll be 13 next week. I subsequently went on to have DS (10lb 5oz on his due date!). Fibroids didn't really cause any issues apart from me being absolutely massive. Like literally comedy Mr Greedy sized bump 😂 I also had to have a syntocin drip after birth to avoid post partum haemorrhage.

Mine was quite an extreme case - there were a lot of fibroids! I did lots of research at the time (loads of threads on here) and they are actually very common and usually harmless.

Luckyme30 · 19/04/2020 11:54

@Tillyscoutsmum oh wow sounds like you had a time of it! Glad you managed to go to term though :)

She didn’t mention the size but showed me on the scan - to be fair I couldn’t really see what she was pointing out so guessing it’s a good thing!

I've had fibroids for years. It didn't affect my first pregnancy and seems to not be causing any problems this time. They may say you will be consultant lead because of this but all it meant for me was keeping an eye on its size and scanning for it. A lot of people don't realise they have fibroids until a scan as generally they tend not to have symptoms or cause problems x

peachpearplum01 · 19/04/2020 21:28

What kind of fibroid is it! Inside / outside uterus? I had a massive fibroid that grew to 10cm when pregnant but it was on the outside of the uterus and didn’t interfere with things (you could see it bulging out through my stomach though, it was quite gross!)
Lots of women have them without realising until they are pregnant, apparently. Good luck!

Luckyme30 · 20/04/2020 07:36

It’s inside the uterus, she pointed it out (in fairness I couldn’t see it even when she pointed it out to me) so have no idea about size - she said she wasn’t going to diagnose anything just yet as I also have scarring, she said my uterus looked bulky but said it could be due to the scarring so she’s made a note of it which they will then check at my next scan.

I had a weird lump on my bump last time. Wondering if it was a fibroid. It went away after I had her.

Fleurchamp · 20/04/2020 18:14

I had two in my first pregnancy. I didn't know until my 20 week scan as it meant they wanted me to have further growth scans and I had to book in for those.
The things to watch are - position, depending on size and location they can interfere with the birth.
"The Rules" - my NHS trust had a rule about the size and number of fibroids which meant you could not use the midwife led unit. I was invited to look around the midwife led unit and it was amazing but at the end I was told I couldn't go there because I had two (small) fibroids and only women with one or none could use it!! I ended up contacting the chief midwife and she overruled the decision as their guidelines were due to change in 6 weeks anyway. I ended up with a straightforward birth in the birth centre 5 days before due date with a 7lb 8oz baby.
I had to have the injection to stop bleeding after birth but that was all.
They vanished before my second pregnancy two years later.

Luckyme30 · 20/04/2020 18:20

@Fleurchamp that’s interesting about them changing the rules.

I’ve been getting a lot of back pain and pain in my side (though could be completely unrelated) but she did say that fibroids could be causing the pain.

I will make sure that I mention it at my 20 week scan just to be sure that it’s monitored although she really wasn’t concerned with it.

Fleurchamp · 20/04/2020 18:32

Hope all goes well! Like I say, I wasn't told anything about mine but then at 20 weeks was told I would have growth scans and a consultant appointment.... then at 36 weeks that their rules precluded a birth centre birth. I think some can grow, some shrink, some go altogether and so they wait and see.

FizzyOranges · 20/04/2020 18:56

I'm in the same situation - fibroids meaning the measurements couldn't be taken at NHS 12 week scan. I've decided to have the NIPT for peace of mind and because I know I would have further testing if I turned out to be high risk. It is £350 where I am going which is a lot but worth it in my opinion. As an added bonus (although I wouldn't have had something private just for this) partner can attend the accompanying scan which will be nice for him!

FizzyOranges · 20/04/2020 18:58

@Luckyme30 sorry I meant to post this in your other thread about whether you would pay for the NIPT!

Elouera · 20/04/2020 19:12

Yes, mine were discovered on a 7 week scan with my 1st pregnancy. Admittedly, I'd only ever had a pelvic scan about 15yrs prior which didn't show any, I have regular periods, not heavy, no pain, so had no reason to think I had fibroids. I have 4, and all smaller than 2-3cm across.

I've asked 2 gynae consultants if they should be removed, but unless they cause severe pain, bleeding or are so large they are impacting the uterine cavity or blocking the fallopian tubes, they generally wont operate. I also had a hycosy where they put dye into the tubes to check the shape of the uterus and tubes, and again told that the fibroids aren't impacting anything or causing infertility.

The are more common if you are overweight, older and of afro/carribean apparently. They are common though and affect about 30% of women.

Gigitree · 20/04/2020 19:17

I have one that they picked up during my 12 week scan. They just said it’s only an issue if it’s blocking babies exit 😂
I’m 30 weeks now and I can’t say I’ve had any issues from it.
