Is anyone being seen by midwifes?

I am expecting #2,
I had high bp with daily monitoring during the third trimester with DD,
I saw the midwife pre lock down for my booking appointment who advised to have aspirin from 12 weeks.

I'm now 17 weeks, I had horrible morning sickness up until the 7th, had a week break and then really sick on Tuesday (14th)
That evening I started with a migraine, I was writing an assignment that evening. But I haven't been able to shift it since, over my right eye, down my neck and the top of my shoulder.
Normally a good nights sleep would clear my headaches but I've still woken with it this morning,
So I've left a message with the midwife who checks messages at half 8.

Should I be worried? Is there any chance they will see me? Is it only routine appointments they are cancelling atm?

I've only seen someone for my booking and my 12 week scan. My 16 week appointment was going to be over the phone, but then was cancelled. So I'll next see some one on 12th May for my next scan

I would have thought your GP would be more appropriate for a headache? As they will consider all possible diagnoses.

SagaBauer · 17/04/2020 08:09

It's most likely to be hormonal rather than BP related at this point in your pregnancy. I think the midwife may direct you to the GP. It's worth seeing if you can get a GP appt while you wait for the midwife to get back to you Smile

I'm 17 weeks and had hypertension last pregnancy. On aspirin from 12 weeks.
I spoke to the midwife last week who said if I had a headache that wouldn't go, or flashing lights, or sudden swelling to contact them and they would see me due to previous pregnancy hypertension.
All trusts seem to be different though!

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 17/04/2020 08:20

Should add to the above, i have had hormonal headaches which go with paracetamol

XylophoneSymphony · 17/04/2020 08:24

It’s total hypocrisy atm

I have a v high risk pregnancy, plus hyperemesis I was seen by a consultant at 12 weeks before cv was such a huge issue and was strongly advised not to continue was told I’d need extra checks etc .....
Then my appts were cancelled. I have been monitoring myself at home as much as I can. It will be 16 weeks between appts to actually see someone except for my anomaly scan which didn’t check me at all !
Under any other circumstances if I had missed my appts I’d be in trouble it would be considered safeguarding!

Hendrixrain · 17/04/2020 08:31

XylophoneSymphony I couldn’t agree with you more! I was late booking but was due to not actually being able to get through to the midwives (self referral in my area). I had email evidence that I had been ignored from 13 weeks. Found out late due to irregular menstrual cycle. Didn’t get an appointment until 22 weeks and was then referred to social services as the MWs were ‘concerned’ even though it’s my second child. Even though they read the emails and saw I was ignored. Every time I tried to ring the line was always busy and they did not have a voicemail function. Funnily enough case was closed after the first meeting and it was a horrendous waste of resources. I should have been complaining about the MWs to my MP or the health ombudsman but I’m not a dick! Haven’t seen my midwife in 2 months now and doubt I’ll ever see her again. I’m at risk of pre-eclampsia and really need my BP checked regularly. So irresponsible and hypocritical

Hendrixrain · 17/04/2020 08:33

Oh, and the best part was that I had paid for a private dating scan and had had an initial appointment with a private midwife that wasn’t cheap! All because I was ignored by the NHS midwifery service. Still had an SS referral made. Checked the report for my area and 23% of women were ignored/found it hard to book last year

KatnissMellark · 17/04/2020 08:36

Hopefully you will be seen by someone. I'm having a high risk pregnancy and receptionist tried to make me go 11 weeks between seeing midwife. Had to speak to midwife to get matb1 and she said I needed to be seen so luckily am now. I am in third trimester though.

In current circumstances I would probably buy a blood pressure machine online and check regularly at home myself given your history.

sel2223 · 17/04/2020 08:37

Just in response to your question about whether to be worried?
I am 23 weeks and suffered horribly with sickness up until about 14 weeks but then it eased off and now I can go a week or more without anything then suddenly start vomiting one day out of the blue.
I also suffer from headaches a lot and have had 2 proper migraines so far this pregnancy which have lasted 2-3 days.

I'm not a health professional so, if in doubt, best to call your GP. But I just wanted to say that symptom wise, I've had the same and baby is absolutely fine.

Umnoway · 17/04/2020 09:06

Yes, I saw my midwife just yesterday actually and will be seeing her again in three weeks. She was wearing full PPE which was quite surreal. Antenatal care is still as vital as ever.

JurassicShay · 17/04/2020 09:15

I had my 34 week appointment yesterday and have been booked in again for 2 weeks time. It was empty in there apart from me & the 2 usual midwives are not working so I saw somebody new. Was told it would be a different midwife at my next appointment too. Midwife was in full PPE.

I'm measuring 31 weeks so a urgent growth scan has been requested also and I was told I will get a call about the appointment instead of a letter.

Midwife told me the local birth center/MLU has been shutting frequently at the minute and if that's where I wanted to give birth then to prepare for it to not be an option. (I have to go to labour ward so doesn't apply to me)

TinnedPearsForPudding · 17/04/2020 09:21

I had a text message yesterday saying that my next appt (12 week dating scan), will be done via the telephone. Hows that going to work then?

Chanel05 · 17/04/2020 10:00

I had my 16 week appointment two weeks ago and it was done face to face. She booked me in for my 24 week appointment at the end which she stated should be face to face.

TobysMum16 · 17/04/2020 11:22

It’s awful being pregnant at the moment. Scary to be missing the face to face appointments but also scary to have to go in and risk the virus.
I’m also concerned about blood pressure. I brought a cheap monitor off amazon and do a weekly check myself. It cost around £15. Maybe think about getting one too. In the mean time I definitely talk to the gp about the persistent headaches.

lastonetime · 17/04/2020 11:28

Thank you all for your advice, seems it's very different by area,

I got a very blunt text back from the midwife voicemail service saying this number is not monitored daily (when I spoke to someone last week they said it still was) and to call the maternity unit, who told me to call the dr, they did ask me to come in to be checked, all okay but BP 20 higher than booking, called the on call obstetrician, who have advised a BP machine for daily checks at home
