Anyone had to go back for a rescan after 20 week scan?

Had my 20 week scan 3 weeks ago and all seemed fine, except baby was moving around so much the sonographer said she couldn't get a good look at her face and heart and I would need to go back for a rescan (she tried hard and said this was a last resort as they are trying to reduce appointments not make people come back but she said she wasn't confident she was getting a proper look at everything).

Anyway, the sonographer seemed very relaxed about it all and i came away from it feeling perfectly happy but now my rescan is tomorrow and the usual pre scan anxiety is setting in.

Has anyone else had to go back? Was everything ok? Do you think they could have seen something of concern at the first scan and want to double check it? Am I being ridiculous?

I'm a bag of nerves now.

I had this with my DS. Try to take it as reassurance rather than worry. Everyone is trying to reduce contact at the moment, that's true, but they would never not invite you back for a rescan if they felt they didn't have all the information they should have at this stage - it's a good thing. No one is cutting corners in yours or your baby's care to reduce contact.
They are looking for measurements etc to ensure that your baby is growing properly. If baby was moving around and they were unable to get that, then they need to rescan. Think of it as an extra peek at your baby - nothing to worry about.
Enjoy!

Had exactly the same issue at my 20 week scan, sonographer couldn't get a proper look at babies heart.

Went back and everything was perfect, only issue was that baby was still in an awkward position so I had to go out and drink lots of water to get her to move. They're just making sure they get a good view of everything, doesn't mean anything is wrong at all.

Amrythings · 16/04/2020 17:14

We had to go back for DS because he was turning somersaults and she couldn't get a good look at his heart. Second time he just kicked the probe as much as he could instead. The wriggling and carrying on has not improved with age, either!

Mucklowe · 16/04/2020 17:15

I just had this today! Sonographer could see everything except the baby's lower spine, so I have to go back in a couple of weeks. Same thing happened at my 12 week scan. I must have a really uncooperative baby 🤣

SleepingStandingUp · 16/04/2020 17:18

Op if thry had any concerns your baby wasn't OK, they'd tell you.

If they're saying baby was a little bugger and wouldn't let them tick off everything on their scan list, that's what it was.

Thry won't lie about it.

And like above, yes I've had to go back for a rescan cos baby was being a bugger and hiding his face

X

THANK YOU ladies!

Rational me knows all of this but pre-scan anxious me needs to hear it from other people.

Yep! I actually had 3 scans for my 20 week scan. First time baby had her legs curled up so the scanner couldn’t see her chest, and her arms across her face so she couldn’t see that.

Second time I went back, they could see her chest but her arms were basically wrapped around her face and head again and they couldn’t see it.

Third attempt they finally were able to complete the anomaly scan. DD is 15 months and perfect, there was no issue with having to rescan it genuinely was they couldn’t see all of her.

Umnoway · 16/04/2020 18:42

I had to return for a re-scan with all five of my babies! All awkward beggars who were facing the wrong way so the sonographers were unable to complete the scan. DC4 was still in an awkward position at the re-scan so they just couldn’t do one measurement at all.

I think this is normal OP, babies don’t play ball.

lilmishap · 16/04/2020 18:48

Twice, first time I had to go three times because she was 'hiding' her face and hands.
The second time the lady thought she could see an issue with his feet but couldn't get a clear view. He had Talipes (clubfoot) as was confirmed the second visit BUT I was told at the first scan why she was concerned.

They don't hide things from you, if there was any concern it would have been explained.

TobysMum16 · 16/04/2020 19:09

Nothing to worry about. I had 4 x 20 week scans with my little boy.
First time he refused to show us anything but his back and bum. Sonographer wasn't very patient and just asked us to rebook. Second time we saw a little more but still not enough to sign off. Third attempt was with a consultant. We saw everything but his hands opening and closing. Consultant didn't want to sign off on it so we were referred to another hospital as scanner was more sophisticated. We were so worried that night and googled all types of terrible things. When we went the next day baby was busy opening and closing his hands.
He's 22 months now and perfect. He is quite stubborn though Hmm

Shelley54 · 16/04/2020 19:16

Yup. Both pregnancies. All was fine.

excitednerves · 16/04/2020 19:28

Yes. I had exactly this. I was sent out to walk around, eat something sweet and still baby wouldn’t get into the right position. Try to think of it as getting an extra peek at baby!

Teakind · 16/04/2020 20:22

Yes me! I worried too but everything was fine. Sometimes it's really just not possible for them to get all the angles and images they need.

FilthyforFirth · 16/04/2020 20:25

I had this with DS. They couldnt see his spine properly, which freaked me out as we have had spina bifida in our family.

The sonographer wasnt worried just said he couldnt see enough. I went back and everything was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed for you.

Dyra · 16/04/2020 21:41

Same. DD was wriggling and kicking the probe, so she was in a poor position for heart measurements the first time.

Came back a week later. Sonographer took one look and sent me off to eat, drink and move about. So I drank a full fat Pepsi, ate a full English breakfast and walked the full length of the hospital twice, taking the stairs wherever I could. Something worked and the sonographer got all the measurements needed.

If the sonographer had thought there had been something wrong, they would have said something. As with PPs, I just thought of it as an extra opportunity to see baby.

DD still loves wriggling and kicking.

sel2223 · 16/04/2020 23:47

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling a lot more relaxed about the scan tomorrow and looking forward to the extra opportunity to see our baby girl.
Thanks for putting my mind at rest

Hi everyone, just wanted to say, I've been for the rescan and everything looks absolutely perfect. She was still wriggling around like crazy but they managed to get all the measurements they missed last time.
I was worrying about nothing!
Thanks for all the replies x

This is really common. Do you have a raised BMI? That’s often the reason it’s difficult to see everything, a few more weeks of growth makes things much clearer to see.

sel2223 · 17/04/2020 22:11

@Indella I do have a raised BMI but I'm pair shaped with a flat stomach normally. All my weight is bum and thighs lol.
The problem for me was just that she wouldn't stay still and kept hiding her face with her hands.
The sonographer did get to check the heart and face today which is what was missed last time but it took a while....i think baby is gonna be a handful as she's been like this at every scan Grin

I had that with my 2nd baby. They couldn’t get a good look at her brain. No wonder she was wriggling like mad! All fine at the 2nd scan and it was lovely to get another look at her.

Good luck Flowers

Jessie9323 · 18/04/2020 09:41

We had to go back and it took 2 hours for them to get the pictures they wanted. They said it's a very common thing! Ours was also the heart. Every time they tried to get a picture the baby would move haha.
When we went back we had to go through all the rig morale of me jumping up and down, shaking, going for a walk, having a fizzy drink and they still couldn't get a picture haha. She had to call in a higher up and to confirm that she could see what she wanted to but not take a picture.

MummaGiles · 18/04/2020 09:43

I had to have a rescan for both my 12 and 20 week scans. DS was just really awkward! It’s nothing to worry about. Enjoy seeing your baby again.
