Dilated before induction

I am currently 38+4 and have started the induction process today. I came in around 10am and had a tampon looking thing inserted at 11:30am as well as having a sweep. Midwife said that she could fit a finger in my cervix already and could also feel babies head. Does this mean I am already starting to dilate? Does anyone have a similar story that they wouldn't mind sharing? Just wish I knew how long I will be here for as I'm not allowed my partner until I'm moved to delivery due to COVID-19

Usually a good sign and might mean they can break your waters for you and avoid the hormone drip? Get up and active as much as you can!! Sideways walking up and down stairs is meant to work wonders!!!

When I was dilated they went straight for membrane rupture instead of the tampon thing and dd was born 6 hours later. Any twinges yet?

@Isadora2007 no twinges yet! Hoping it won't be long though!

Admitting 1 finger equates to 1cm usually. When you have that examination they assess your bishop score which is looking at dilation of cervix, length of cervix, consistency of cervix, when baby’s head is and position of cervix. This starts from a score of 0. Really you want cervix to be as favourable as possible for waters to be broken. This usually means cervix isn’t too far back, it’s Dilated at least 2cm, it’s not too firm, and no more than 1cm long.
It’s good news that you are 1cm dilated, would be good to know the other findings.
Remember the aim of the pessary is to favour your cervix to have your waters broken, going in to labour is sometimes a side effect of this

I was in exactly the same situation, unfortunately nothing happened until I was put on the drip at around 9:00pm, fingers crossed it goes quickly for you! Either way, it won't be long now Smile
