Hi am 29 weeks pregnant with my first baby.Although the midwife says my bump measures what it should at this stage 30cm (1 cm for each week) I am paranoid that my bump does not look very big.People dont even know I'm pregnant and people who do know keep saying you dont look pregnant. My boss even said this week " you dont look 20 weeks pregnant" to which I had to reply actually Im 29 weeks not 20. Is anyone else having this problem? It is really getting me down at a time when I was starting to enjoy my pregnancy.

Hi Polkat...I havnt even seen my midwife yet! Seeing her next wednesday, but I do have a bump , but dont know if its the size it should be (im 25 weeks). If the midwife says its right, must be? Dont worry and enjoy..im sure you will be wishing it were smaller soon x

VictorVictoria · 14/09/2007 08:54

I am in the same boat although only 20 weeks. You need to speka to MRs BAdger and get her to link you to the photograph of her at 39 weeks. Amazingly small/neat bump and I think her baby was 8lb+

Eaglebird · 14/09/2007 09:17

I'm 34+4 and, after chatting to other women at ante-natal classes & aqua-fit class, I was worried my bump seemed too small. My family all comment on what a small / neat little bump I've got too, which seemed to confirm my worries.
However the midwife has checked it's measuring ok for dates, and a scan I had at 32 weeks confirmed everything is going ok.
So please don't let a perceived small bump worry you.
At my last midwife appointment, a medical student was there, and I was asked if it was ok for him to have a feel of my bump. He said he couldn't fathom out which way the baby was lying, and the midwife commented that I had good abdominal muscles, which made it a bit tricky to determine the position of the baby. So rejoice that your neat bump may be due to strong tummy muscles

claraq · 14/09/2007 09:19

I am also 29 weeks and when I was measured on Wed was 27cm - whereas the previous appointment - three weeks earlier - I was 28cm! So I went from panicking about having a large baby to worrying that it is not growing properly...

Tbh the way you look will be a lot more to do with the way you are carrying the baby, as well as things like the strength of your stomach muscles, than the size of the baby. As long as the midwife says everything is fine I really woud not worry.

j20baby · 14/09/2007 09:30

i didn't show properly till about 26 weeks but this is my 2nd one, be grateful, you may have a nice small bump and no stretch marks!

seriously though, don't worry about it, i can depend how lo is layed, how good your muscles are..etc

Alfie72 · 14/09/2007 10:53

I have had a nice compact bump throughout my pregnancy, I too was told that I was small for x amount of weeks but measured fine on scan and M/W's measurement. My M/w made me proud too like Eaglebird telling me I had good abs...Trust me, Your bump will suddenly expand big style at 36 weeks, all I get now is " My how you have grown" " you're much bigger now" relish your small bump whilst you have it !!

bubblagirl · 14/09/2007 11:03

god i wish i had that problem i looked full term at that stage everyone thought i was about to give birth and still had 5 mths to go lol and my belly has never been the same again lol my sister howeever with her first was still in size 10 jeans till the end so we are all diffe3rent you could be carrying more to the back than the front as long as measurements are right dont worry

designerbaby · 14/09/2007 11:14

polkat - I think this is something we all worry about - whatever our size - I've looked ready to pop since about 20 weeks... I'm now 34 weeks+ and the size of a house. I'm worried that I'm so huge, the baby's going to be huge, they're going to have to do a C-section blah blah blah...

And my work colleague had practically NO bump at all (seriously I last saw her when she was 37 weeks and she looked how Iooked at 18 weeks.

She had a perfectly healthy 7lb 7oz baby girl.

Don't worry - it depends on your body shape, inside and out and little more... I look huge mostly because I'm a short-waisted short-arse, apparently...

Just think - you probably won't have horrific stretch marks and will spend less on hideous tent-like maternity wear...

Don't worry, I have the opposite problem.. want to smack the next person who asks are you sure it's not twins!!! Am 21 weeks as well, and trying hard not to let this get to me.

Best thing to do is not to pay attention to other's comments and ENJOY the pregnancy if you feel that way (am still sicky, so waiting for my blooming feeling!!)

teenyweeny · 14/09/2007 13:56

Definitely dont worry, I'm 22 weeks and quite small, a big fatty (and I mean BIG)told me when I was about 17 weeks that I was going to be massive, funny thing was that I had only out on about 2lbs at the time....another firend who is about 4 weeks ahead of me keeps on asking if I'm worried about my weight gain (or lack) I was so worried about it that I called my midwife, she laughed and said that everyone is different and that as long as the baby is growing I'm doing my job. xx

coleyboy · 14/09/2007 14:02

Last year my friend (average height and frame) had a lovely neat bump all the way through her pregnancy, and never got very big. However she had a 8 and a half pound healthy girl.

Don't worry, everyone carrys in different ways.

mumzyof2 · 14/09/2007 15:44

I wasnt showing at all with my ds. My bump only popped out when I left work at 36 weeks, and my son was a healthy 7lb 4oz. I wouldn worry about it. If your midwife says its ok, then it will be. Dont worry, the baby's just more on your inside than out!

lailasmum · 14/09/2007 15:52

polkat are you quite tall? sometimes if you are then the bump sort of stretches out along your body and you don't look that big but still measure right.

Jobi1 · 14/09/2007 15:57

I think we all worry whatever - I worry I'm too big, but again measurements, scans etc are all spot on, so that's the most important thing. I snapped at one of the women in work a few weeks back and she hasn't said a word since! It does my head in a bit that things which people wouldn't normally say are suddenly ok just cos you're pregnant!

Gill79 · 14/09/2007 17:00

how do you measure the bump?

MarsLady · 14/09/2007 17:04

My bf had a pea for a bump throughout her pregnancies! She got thoroughly p-ed off when people made comments... but she had lovely sized babies and eventually decided to ignore everyone.

Jobi1 · 14/09/2007 17:11

Measure from pubic bone to top of fundus I think.

polkat · 14/09/2007 17:40

Thanks everyone am feeling alot better about the size of my compact bump now, although huby thinks I am massive. lailas mum I am not tall am a short ass but do have huge boobs which I think might even things out a bit

MrsFish · 15/09/2007 10:47

I wish I still had a small neat bump. I was doing ok for the first 30 weeks, am now 38 weeks tomorrow and it has all popped out feel massive now.

CorrieDale · 15/09/2007 10:54

You are so lucky. Truly. I am [green]. When I was 29 weeks I was massive. Or so I thought...

At 40 weeks I was so big people would eye me uncertainly, clearly anxious that I was going to give birth there and then. I could not have been bigger. Or so I thought...

At 41 weeks (when I eventually did give birth), I could barely walk I was so huge. I have never seen a bump as big - not even on women carrying twins.

It was bloody hard work, I can tell you.

And you would think, nearly 11 weeks on, I'd have forgotten all that. You are wrong! The pain of childbirth I could do again tomorrow, but the thought of carrying that humungous bump around again makes me feel quite ill.

moneytree · 15/09/2007 11:42

Hi, I have two children and I was also very small for my dates. With my DD I measured 31cm when I was 38 weeks. I had a scan to be on the safe side and she was larger than average. She was born 7lb 7oz. The lady who did the scan said that this was normal especially if you have a average/long body. Enjoy your pregnancy, if your midwife is concerned she will put you forward for a scan.
