Snacks for hospital bag

So packing of the hospital bag has started. Looking for ideas of what to add snack wise. 🤔 obviously the most important thing. I’m thinking post birth mainly as obviously DH won’t be around if we have to stay in. Anything easy to pack seems to be sweet so any savoury options would be useful!

So far I’ve only packed cereal bars! Interested to hear what everyone else suggests 🙂

Mummsnett · 15/04/2020 22:40

Following as I was ravenous after having my first and all I had were biscuits and cereal bars. Simple savoury snacks for after birth are definitely on my radar this time.

schafernaker · 15/04/2020 22:41

😂 yep so far I have chocolate and cereal bars, I’ve popped in some hula hoops as figure they are easy enough to eat crushed 🙈

During labour you aren't gonna be that hungry. I found that I completely lost my appetite once the contractions started. But afterwards you will be really hungry. I always take sandwiches for afterwards.
Also, not a snack but I recommend packing a bottle of lucozade just to keep your energy up during labour as you do feel thirsty. Midwives always recommend taking an energy drink too. Not one with tons of sugar tho. Like monster or red bull. I always got the lucozade sport.

Good luck x

Crisps
Breadsticks
Crackers
Small cheese singles
Juice boxes
Mints - mouth gets dry

LH1987 · 15/04/2020 22:42

I was thinking mini graze boxes, small packs of olives and tuc crackers.

I took fruit when I had my second baby as I had been desperate for some the first time and just had stuff like biscuits. I felt like I had had all the nutrients leeched out of my body😂. Also, it’s really hot in some hospitals so it was good for that too.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 15/04/2020 22:44

I had lucozade sport (4 bottles ans I went through them all, Gas and air makes you really thirsty!!), bags of dried fruit, sugary sweets, pot noodles, think of things that you can easily eat with one hand. I wasn't that hungry after the birth so just take things that are light

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 15/04/2020 22:44

By sugary sweets I mean Haribo Tangfastics etc

doggeek · 15/04/2020 22:46

Jelly babies for during labour and then savoury snacks for post natal. I took microwave rice and porridge pots as they were more substantial and could replace a meal if the hospital food wasn't very nice.

I'm on my third baby and I've never felt hungry either before, during or after labour! Tried Lucozade during my first and very lengthy labour but it just made me vom.
However, having a home birth this time so there is a mini bottle of Prosecco already chilled for me in the mini fridge! Grin

schafernaker · 15/04/2020 23:02

Thanks some great ideas! Have some ideas of things to pop in now. Will hopefully next able to get some bits nearer to the time as once we are in we can’t leave. Thanks Covid 🙈

I know last time I loved the fruit post birth, there’s a fruit stall at the hospital so maybe we can get some on the way in😂

Kids suckies yogurts....

confusednortherner · 15/04/2020 23:32

I ate a pack of Jaffa cakes while in labour in the pool with ds and as it was a birthing unit they got fish and chips for lunch after he was born! I'd say crisps/ nuts, apples, cereal bars and sweets. It's hard to take savoury that will survive heat of hospital wards.

Wishing56 · 15/04/2020 23:49

I was in hospital for 4 days after my c-section and my favourites were strawberries, grapes, some fancy shortbread biscuits, jaffa cakes, mini cheddars, belvita soft bakes.
Recommend Robinsons squeezy squash as I got sick of water so could add a couple of drops to give a bit of flavour.

squee123 · 15/04/2020 23:57

do check if your hospital is prepared to microwave stuff for you. Many aren't. However most have access to boiling water for drinks so porridge pots and noodle pots are a good option. Fruit is a good option. You can get shelf stable fruit pots. Also dried fruit is a good option. Cereal bars, Nakd bars, energy balls. Cake bars. Sugary sweets for labour. Cartons of fruit juice. If you're induced take all the food in the world as you can be in for days just waiting

happymummy12345 · 16/04/2020 00:03

I didn't even think about food tbh.

schafernaker · 16/04/2020 00:39

@happymummy12345 I had an attempted induction followed by emergency csection and as Dd was prem I was then in hospital with her for a further 2 weeks after. I’m just trying to be organised as last time DH and family bought little care packages. Corona won’t allow for this this time. So just a few basic ideas to get through a couple of days :) this one is going to go to term and we will be home quickly 🤞🏼

I packed loads of snacks and drinks for during labour but to be honest I wasn't even hungry and also had to be nil by mouth re food during labour so wasn't able to eat anyway! I did find lucozade isotonic drinks a godsend though so I would recommend packing those! X

kittykat7210 · 16/04/2020 10:16

I found the hospital food to be plenty, I even shared my food with my husband since I couldn’t finish it all! I have taken some sports drinks and nature valley bars though, although I never ate anything during labour last time, my husband did!

I laboured very quickly last time, and am expecting a similar experience this time. I’m not expecting to be in the hospital more than 12 hours total. Hopefully less since they are discharging from labour ward now as much as they can!

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 16/04/2020 10:27

I sank bottles of blue Powerade when I had my son.
I fully intend on stocking up this time around too.
