Folic Acid High Bmi

Hi so my BMI is 29.7 so just under the cusp of obesity, I understand a bmi of 30+ would mean I should have a higher dose of folic acid prescribed. I called the drs today and they called me back and advised me no there is no need to increase it, only if there is family history of neurological issues or diabetes. This contradicts what's online and I'm not sure if I should ask again?! Xx

My BMI is 34. I was never told to take a higher dosage. Baby is fine at 21weeks.

My BMI is 32 and I never took the higher dose. I'm now 23 weeks and baby is growing just as she should be.

Thanks, I'm more concerned the dr was like no that's not true about needing it for a higher bmi but it says it online? I've been taking folic acid since August and still taking it now with pregnacare I just hope the midwife makes her contact with me soon and she can clear it up, as I only registered with the drs yesterday, I'm 4+4 xx

My BMI is exactly the same! There are other factors too when they recommend the 5mg of folic acid. I've just had IVF, and the consultant there was surprised my GP hadn't already started me on the higher dose Confused. I assumed it was ONLY for those with previous neural tube problems. I have also lost 11kg since last year, so certainly would have qualified for the higher dose then.

I'm early 40's and was told that is the 'likely' reason. I did wonder if weight and/or IVF pregnancy was the reason, but no one gave me a clear answer.

How far along are you? Is there a different GP at your practice you could organise a phone consult with the check?

Sorry, cross post OP.

I'm on higher dose folic acid but I have numerous issues and not sure which one it's for 😂
Neurological conditions, BMI of 35, thyroid and hormone disorder issues, vit d deficiency

My BMI was 30.3 at the start of my pregnancy and no-one ever said anything to me about taking extra folic acid - the midwife asked me if I had been taking it at my booking in appointment which I had, but that was only a 'normal' dose - not heard of having to take a higher dose due to BMI to be honest! I am now 22 weeks and all is well, if that's any reassurance!

It was written in the information section of my pregnancy notes booklet. By the time I'd read it I was already close to 12 weeks so didn't bother. As your BMI is under 30, you're fine. My midwife didn't make a big deal of it.

Don't forget there is folate in some food as well....things like leafy green veg, beans, oranges etc. If you Google it, you'll get a list of where to find it naturally.

I wouldn't be too concerned if your doctor didn't deem it necessary. They don't prescribe it as a matter of course.

You are BMI less than 30 - normal dose is fine!
