Pregnancy while breastfeeding

Littlebittasunshine · 15/04/2020 12:48

Hi all just wondering if its possible to get pregnant while exclusively breastfeeding and still breastfeeding through the nights for a 14 week old. I don't have periods. I tried to get a coil put in a 8 weeks pp but it was too painful (I've had two coils before that never hurt and this was excruciating) so was told to wait. Tried the mini pill but that made my milk almost vanish. So we've now just been doing the pull out method and had a couple oopsies so now I'm obviously a little concerned.
Had anyone got pregnant this soon while exclusively bf ?

It is always possible to get pregnant if you are having unprotected sex. Rubber up for the time being.

WillowySnicket · 15/04/2020 13:06

Yes!

BessMarvin · 15/04/2020 13:06

Yes but it varies how long you might have to wait.
You ovulate before your period starts so you can't rely on knowing when it's all going to come back.

Yes it's possible. Don't have unprotected sex unless you want another baby - getting pregnant soon after birth can bring some risks as well, as your body won't have time to recover fully.

Yes of course it is.

Elouera · 15/04/2020 13:14

Of course you can! A close friend had ectopic, failed IVF and assumed would never had children. Fell naturally, then whilst exclusively BF fell pregnant with twins, when baby was 3mths old! Yes, of course you can get pregnant. Either get morning after pill (if ALL the 'oopsies' were in the last 2-3days) or buy condoms. Have you done a pregnancy test?

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 15/04/2020 13:22

DD is now 5 months, im not getting the coil as we want to start TTC #2 in 6 months or so, and so we're using condoms. I seriously don't understand why so many people seem to just completely discount condoms as contraception once theyre in a committed relationship. There's a name for people who use pulling out to prevent pregnancy, and that's parents.

OP, you need to take a pregnancy test, and then use condoma.

😬 well dont I feel silly
I have ordered some tests from amazon that should be arriving tomorrow. I think we will use condoms from now on.
Thank you

I exclusively breastfed and my period returned at 4 months . However my son started sleeping through the night around 10-12 weeks . My sister got her period back at 8 weeks and her baby was night nursing.

Breastfeeding can absolutely be used as a form of contraception for the first 6 months and is 99% effective as long as a number of set criteria are strictly met, the most important part being the exclusivity. I have used this successfully twice and will be after this baby arrives. From the NHS site:

You're unlikely to have any periods if you breastfeed exclusively (give your baby breast milk only) and your baby is under 6 months old.

Because of this, some women use breastfeeding as a form of natural contraception. This is known as the lactational amenorrhoea method, or LAM.

It's important to start using another form of contraception if:

your baby is more than 6 months old
you give them anything else apart from breast milk, such as a dummy, formula or solid foods
your periods start again (even light spotting counts)
you stop night feeding
you start to breastfeed less often
there are longer intervals between feeds, both during the day and at night
The effect of expressing breast milk on LAM isn't known, but it may make it less effective.

@happymumof this is dangerously misleading information. Breastfeeding should only be used as contraception if there are no other options, it is not at all reliable. You can get pregnant without having periods. Please don't go about telling women they can't get pregnant while EBF.

firstimemamma · 15/04/2020 15:04

My friend's friend got pregnant the first time she had sex after having her first baby. It's very possible. The condoms sound like a good idea.

Yes people might argue that you're not having periods so how can u get pregnant but as a previous poster said - you never know when your period is going to return and you obviously ovulate 2 weeks before the first period. On the basis of that it's safest to assume you could start ovulating and having periods again at any time, even while breastfeeding frequently as all women's bodies work in different ways and it's best to be safe.

littlefawn · 15/04/2020 15:48

Definitely possible and I agree I would use condoms.

After first baby I exclusively breastfed for 6 months and didn't get a period until 7 months after birth, pregnant 9 months after birth although this was on purpose as we wanted our children to be close in age.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that we would always recommend seeking contraceptive advice from medical professionals.

We must also mention that we have not checked the qualifications of any users who post here and we'd hate someone to fall pregnant unexpectedly due to taking another user's advice....
