First pregnancy - pain to worry about or paranoia?

Hey everyone - it’s my first post here, but I’ve read lots and seen how supportive everyone is to each other.

I’m in my early thirties, and pregnant for the first time - just over 7 weeks. And we’re over the moon. But I feel like every day I’m getting more paranoid something is going wrong, though not sure if it’s justified and I should be worried. I’ve had some light cramping since the start, like occasional mild period pains - my midwife said that was normal. But now every twinge, I’m assuming the worst. It’s affecting my sleep, and I just think about it all the time. I’m not sure if it’s being in isolation that is making it worse....less distractions.

Yesterday it was in the centre just below my belly button which, a sharp-ish discomfort, so I called the doctor who said nothing to worry about (I now think was due to constipation - i’ll spare you the details, but the twinge has stopped!!). Since last night and today I’ve been having twinges on my right side of my abdomen - from about my belly button height to inline with my hip.

I just don’t know if it is something to worry about or if my paranoia is getting the better of me.

Thank you for any advice x

I could’ve written this post ! Firstly , congratulations on your pregnancy 💕 secondly , cramping is normal as long as you’re not doubled over in pain or bleeding (that’s what I was told). I had cramping quite bad but not doubled over, and that started at 7 weeks. It’s been on and off since and I’m now 20 weeks pregnant and still get these bursts of cramps as you described (sharp etc) and also now have indigestion which is HELL! But please don’t worry unless you have any bleeding or to the point where you feel like you can’t really move . But even then things can still be ok! X

I was the same as you though, worrying a lot and I made myself really miserable so please don’t read too much into it xx

@LHill32 I was/am the same. Every trapped fart, every cramp was sending me into a spin, especially in the first few weeks after I found out. Cramps are very common and normal, things to look out for are severe cramps/pain (double over kind of pain) and/or bleeding.
I found it easier to concentrate on getting through one day at a time. I am now 11+4 and anxiety is a little better, but by no means gone, I got good days and bad days. One day at a time.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Now, pour a cup of tea, grab a biscuit and calm the fuck down!

Every little niggle or sensation is going to drive you crazy if you let it.

Your body is going through huge changes right now! Especially as it's your first rodeo. Your baby engine is just starting up after 30odd years of the easy life. You're going to feel it!

Trust your midwife, pain and discomfort in early pregnancy is absolutely normal. Severe pains and bleeding together are not.

Relax, you'll never get to do your first time again. Pay attention to your body and let it happen. You'll know if there is something wrong.

So glad I found this post. I too am 33, first baby 3 half weeks pregnant super early. I have had mild cramping/period pains most days mainly on the left side. No bleeding at all. Nipples are so sore boobs are feeling heavy. I've just all of a sudden become overwelmed with worry. What symptoms did everyone else have??

LHill32 · 16/04/2020 13:33

Thanks @GaaaaarlicBread @Mc3209 @Crackerscheesescabbyknees ! This helped me so much. I'm still quite uncomfortable on the RHS but I'm just trusting my body now that if there was a problem, it would tell me! I've also stopped checking with Dr Google, which has really helped too! I want to enjoy this time Smile (tiredness and sickness aside Wink xx

Cramping is really normal. The consultant that I saw in EPU said that 'problem' cramping is severe, unrelenting and escalating.

Because of this, whenever I have had pain, I have set myself a sort of mental reminder to come back to it in 3hrs and review it. This has hugely helped my anxiety when it is none of those concerning things.

Prepare yourself now for the stabbing pain when you move too quick - round ligament stretching has been awful for me!

LHill32 · 16/04/2020 13:38

@Nic2908 from one worrier to another, please try not to! You'll feel better when you chill out as @Crackerscheesescabbyknees says! Symptoms-wise - My boobs are huge and sore too, all very normal! Very tired too! (growing a human after all!)

Sounds like ligament pain. Easier said than done but try not to worry
