First trimester - peeing isn’t straightforward?

Hi all,

I got nowhere trying to investigate this on google so I apologise for needing to ask you all if you experienced this or not? I’m just worried it’s a sign of something bad.

I’m currently 11wks but I would say I noticed this at least by 6wks. Prior to pregnancy I had a retro erred and retroflexed uterus. It basically sat flopped back onto my bowel.

The Q.
I go to the loo to pee a fairly normal amount of times. The first bit comes out easily. Then I find I feel as if I’m finished but if I change position the urge returns and I know I’m not.
I will lean forwards, let out a bit, sit up straight again, let out a bit... I usually have to repeat this rocking thing a couple of times to feel actually empty.

Is this common? Have you had it? Is it just another normal pregnancy thing?
Thanks x

I have a retroverted uterus too- at my 12 week scan they couldn’t get the neck measurements as it was tipped too far back for the sonographer to get a clear view, so I had to have transvaginal scan!

Around 13 weeks I experienced similar to you to the extent that on a couple of occasions I couldn’t get any pee out at all- worried I had a UTI I’d drank 2 litres of water in a couple hours and I had to go home from work because it was so painful! Ended up having to pretty much do a handstand whilst sat on the loo to go! I’d rang triage but the midwife had no clue of any link to retroverted uterus etc and simply advised a go trip to check for UTI if I couldn’t go. Googling it I found a fair few women experience this but it isn’t common as such. Avoid lettin your bladder get over full as that seemed to make it worse for me. It went by about 16 weeks when my uterus tipped forward.

Hey,
I don’t have that condition but I do take longer to go now that I’m pregnant, I was trying to look into why and read somewhere that if when you go, you lean forward and almost put your elbows on your knees it is supposed to help to fully empty the bladder, something to do with it being similar to squatting.
Hope it’s not causing too much trouble & congratulations on your pregnancy!

I still do this now at 33+3

I could literally sit on the toilet all night and just keep repositioning and dribbling. It never ends 😂 I've never really thought about it though. Never had any issues with it either, it's just annoying

Yes I have this, I have a retroverted uterus and have had this exact problem.

As the uterus moved forward, it actually made peeing extremely difficult, especially if I had a full bladder, I couldn’t start peeing at all!!

It does correct itself eventually!

You can get this with a retroverted uterus - sometimes needs a catheter or other simple treatments due to urinary retention. If you’re drinking normally and finding you can’t per, especially if you can’t pee at all, you need to talk to midwives or your GP again. It corrects usually in second trimester when your uterus grows bigger and comes up out of the pelvis. Hope that helps.

Urinary retention is a complication of pregnancy unfortunately! You’re doing the right thing by repositioning to empty your bladder - you’re at higher risk of UTI if you don’t empty it completely.

Another thing that can make a big difference is constipation - Make sure you’re opening your bowels regularly, constipation will make urinary retention much much worse

Ahh! Thank you all so so much! ❤️

I was starting to worry that it meant I was definitely having a problem and would end up with an “incarcerated uterus”, good to hear you guys say you had this and then it solves itself 👍
I’m having non-identical twins so I suppose these symptoms will happen earlier.

Nelbert you’re probably onto something with that too! I’ve been ridiculously constipated but have found it too hard to drink Fybogel consistently enough (delicious swig of sand in water anyone?) I have some Psyllium tablets coming in the post instead.
