Anyone been for one lately? Not sure what to expect with this pandemic going on. I'm in Surrey.

Where I am ours are being replaced with a Hba1c test with everything that's going on they don't want us there any longer than we have to

erised · 13/04/2020 17:22

Yeah I am a bit concerned about waiting around in a health centre for 2 hours tbh...

I had mine a few weeks ago. Social distancing was enforced and staff all in PPE. Plenty of hand sanitiser around and people cleaning

Thegirlfromnumber4 · 13/04/2020 17:27

I had one last week at hospital and they said it was safer for me to sit in my car for the two hours and then go back in. Which was good because it made me feel really sick and would have hated to be sat in a waiting room feeling awful.

Had mine in a hospital in London a few weeks ago. I was a little worried but really it felt very safe. Staff in PPE and only other isolating pregnant ladies around. Good luck.

Hello OP

Had mine today! It was literally just a fasting finger prick test and they drew some bloods!

I’ll get a call in the week if anything is occurring xx

Apples6544 · 13/04/2020 18:51

Hi yes mine was last week, the waiting room was very spaced out and midwives in PPE. Took several blood samples, I drank the drink then waited in my car for the 2 hours, returned for a final blood test and that was it. It was fine in the hospital, very quiet. They call you after if there are any issues.

I'm in Surrey (ESH) and my hospital said that they aren't doing it! Because I had GD with my previous pregnancy they are just going to proceed as though I have it! Which I do understand but it is a bit frustrating.

LuckyA · 14/04/2020 08:18

I'm in Surrey but had my GTT before the lockdown measures. The guidance has now changed and HBA1C is recommended as they dont want you waiting around for 2 hours. However, this is not reliable in pregnancy. It worries me a lot as I was diagnosed with GTT but if I only had the HBA1C I would not have been diagnosed as that is within range for me. I would be very cautious about having just HBA1C and falling through the net.

worried88 · 14/04/2020 15:04

I was given a machine to do a finger prick test four times a day at home, as they didn't want me hanging around the hospital for two hours for the GTT test. It found that I do have gestational diabetes, so I'm now following a GD-friendly diet and continuing to test and monitor my blood sugar levels four times a day.

Liverbird77 · 14/04/2020 15:13

Mine was next week but has been replaced with hbc1 test at 28 weeks appt instead. It's just one blood test with no wait around.

Liverbird77 · 14/04/2020 15:15

@LuckyA could you give a bit more information about the test please? Why is it more unreliable than the normal GTT?
Any extra info/facts would be very gratefully received.

AliasGrape · 14/04/2020 15:19

Yeah mine been replaced with hbc1 test at my 28 week midwife appointment too. I’m a little anxious about missing something to be honest, but got to trust they know best.

LuckyA · 14/04/2020 15:47

@Liverbird77 hormone levels fluctuate in pregnancy and can affect HBA1C, and HBA1C is an average of approximately last 3 months of glucose levels so it can be more useful at the start of pregnancy as opposed to nearer the end when GD is typically likely to occur. My HBA1C and fasting BG are fine so if I just had those 2 tests, my GD would have gone undetected. Its my post meals that are an issue which is only detected following a 2 hour GTT. If your hospital are no longer offering it, I would start monitoring your own BG levels anyway to give you a better indication

Liverbird77 · 14/04/2020 16:42

@LuckyA thank you so much. I didn't have GD in my first pregnancy, so hoping I won't get it this time, but equally I would want to know because I know how dangerous it can be
