Gender probability

Can someone please explain the probability of having a boy or girl. Is it literally 50/50 every time? If your parents have brothers or sisters has this got any influence? I'm just genuinely interested in how it works!

I think it is 50/50. My husband is one of 5 boys (no girls) i had 2 sons. I am hoping that my 3rd and final baby is a girl but im not holding my breath. I actually asked this question to an IVF Clinic in Cyprus as i was planning to travel there for gender selection. I was afraid i might arrive over and my husband would only have male sperm, the doctor said in all her 30 yrs practice she has never seen a man with only male or female sperm they have same amount of both. So in my eyes def 50/50 and i dont believe this timing thing either

I’ve always wondered this. My dad has 5 brothers and 3 sisters , my husbands Dad has 5 brothers, no girls in their family, So I was curious as to what we’d have. We were actively TTC but didn’t do the whole gender selection thing but happened to have sex just the once , 5 days before ovulation, I read on google that the chances are we would have a girl as girl sperm lasts longer ? We had a gender scan at 16 weeks and we are having a girl! Just had my 20 week scan and they confirmed girl too. So I’m unsure of the 50/50 ! I thought it was weird that google said we’d have a girl and we did 🤣

I’m sure I read somewhere that men can have a ‘leaning’ of sperm to one sex - so more likely that you’d keep having boys but not 100%. Again I don’t know scientific basis but I thought younger fitter men more likely to have boys - eg Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Gary Linneker. And older men more likely to father girls. But I’d imagine that just pushes the probability to 51/49 or something.

I was told that as male sperm are fractionally lighter, more males are confirmed but statistically early miscarriage prior to knowing you are pregnant generally happens more with boys than girls so it evens out to generally 50/50. My OH is also one of five boys. Has two boys from a previous relationship and we have a little boy too. Currently pregnant and curious to what this one will be but I'm betting on a boy too 🤣

I read an article a while back about this and there'd been some kind of study on it. The conclusion was that the whole boys and girls running in the family was just a coincidence and with every baby it's literally 50/50.

I still think there's something in it though. I know the sex is determined by the male but my family is literally all girls and I just knew I'd have a girl. Everyone kept saying it had to be a girl and they'd have a heart attack if it was a boy....and guess what? It's a girl 😂

Goingtobeoldearly · 12/04/2020 18:10

I know someone who was looking into choosing the sex, they were having ivf anyway, out of 10 fertilised eggs, there was only 1 boy. The husbands family regularly produced only girls.

Corkmom · 12/04/2020 18:11

Ive been tracking my ovulation so this month i only did the deed 4 days prior to ovulation so if i eventually get pregnant and i have a boy i know for a fact the timing this is complete rubbish Smile ive read other posts from people though that they only had sex exact day of ovulation and had girls! So i dont know if im.doing right or wrong tbh

Hoggleludo · 12/04/2020 18:18

I have no clue of the answer

But this is such an interesting question!! Love it. Actually made me think and google!

Oldestchild90s · 12/04/2020 18:34

Yes it's something i always wondered myself. We are expecting a girl, which we are over the moon about but i always knew she'd be a girl i just had this feeling from the first scan! My other half has a split family of boys and girls so it will be interesting to know if we will have another girl or have a boy next time (if things work out that way of course) obviously happy with either though 😍

Thanks for the interesting replies!

I’m not sure

I like to think it’s 50:50 but I know so many people who have children of all the same sex

My mum was the only girl after 4 boys.

My dad was the eldest of 2 boys and a girl

I was the oldest of two girls and 20 years later a boy Grin

But me and my sister both have one girl and one boy each

Corkmom · 12/04/2020 18:42

Best of luck Smile

I know a family of four daughters who each had only daughters, apart from the youngest who had a daughter and then a son!

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 12/04/2020 20:10

From what I’ve heard it’s 50/50 and as a pp said, if you get pregnant before you ovulate then it’s more likely to be a girl and if it’s when you ovulate it’s more likely to be a boy. This is true for us as when counting back, I conceived both of my boys on the day or day after I ovulated.

However, someone once said to me that there’s only an 8% statistical probability of having 3 of the same gender due to all of the possible combinations in a 3 child household. I find that really low as I know families with just girls or just boys, but not many with 3 children.

maryd84 · 12/04/2020 20:35

My partner was sure that we would be having a girl because boys are rare enough in his family😁. I had a feeling all along that we were having a boy. I was correct. It was confirmed a few days ago at my 21 week scan to my partners surprise😁

sel2223 · 12/04/2020 21:09

Did everyone see the articles about Britain's biggest family, who just had their 22nd child?
I found it interesting that they've now got exactly 11 of each sex so it's exactly 50/50 but it's taken them this long to reach that point....if they'd stopped at 6, they'd have 4 boys and 2 girls.
