can anyone advise on which would be best for having next to the bed for the first few months, swinging cribs look really nice but moses baskets look comfier and more padded and are more portable but im worried about how stable they are. how do i decide?

no idea how you decide. we have a 40 year old moses basket here ready for when pudding arrives.

tassisssss · 13/09/2007 14:44

up to you!

the cribs tend to last longer as they're bigger

as you say the basket is more portable so think about whether you'd like baby to sleep in it downstairs? (we used flat pram downstairs and crib upstairs)

(and you don't need either...could go straight to cot)

i like moses with wheels, I heard most babies prefer back and forth than side to side motion (crib) I used tea tree mattress very comfy and breathes (SID safe)

RGPargy · 13/09/2007 14:51

Personally i will be using a moses basket simply for the reason that it is portable and the baby can sleep in it upstairs and downstairs, until i am ready for her to go into the cot.

am expecting to using desk drawer at work

I liked the Moses basket because I could park it on the floor right next to my bed, leaving DD within perfect stroking and soothing distance.

i used a basket which ds was really happy in. tip: get a stand tho (can get from mcare) as i found it hard to put baby in basket on floor with stitches (ouch).

RGPargy · 13/09/2007 15:31

Oh yeah, i'm gonna get two stands. One for upstairs, one for downstairs. Just because i can. Coz i'm posh like that. So ner.

Emzy5 · 13/09/2007 15:43

ooooooh get you....

nappyaddict · 13/09/2007 15:44

i just used the carry cot part from our pram.

mixedmama · 13/09/2007 15:45

I went for Moses basket, for the moveability factor. Once outgrown the baby can go into the cot. for me didnt see the point in the crib for 6-8 months then cot, but just my opinion I preferred that he went into his cot sooner.

mumzyof2 · 13/09/2007 20:47

I used both, I had a moses basket downstairs in the living room, and then a crib (that I was obliged to use as my grandad made it for me when I was a baby) that I out next to my bed. I found the crib better because he slept in that for the first four month until he went into his own room, whereas (I cant remember exactly) but I dont think they can be in a moses basket for that long.

Moses baskets are portable so would be more practical. Can you borrow one? Ours only got three weeks use before being discarded and DD2 never used it.

lomondgal · 13/09/2007 20:51

I have a moses basket and crib but my baby prefers to sleep in her pram (m&p ultima 3 in 1 with proper mattress) anytime we put her to sleep in the crib she wakes up and won't settle. sleeps right through in the pram but in a few weeks will be putting her in a cot.
(she is 12 wks)

Alfie72 · 13/09/2007 22:47

I have plumped for a moses basket, much more practical and safer I reckon.
What about a cot ? Still cool to put a wee one at the bottom of the mattress and you'll get lots of uyse out of it. I only got the basket due to a lack of space issue.
