How much bedding for a new born ?

How much are you getting? Do I need two of everything? I'm thinking I probably only need one bumper as the baby will sleep down the far end of the cot anyway but two of everything else for washing / incase of sick-ups, etc, does that sound about right?

Its all soooo expensive isn't it.

I wouldn't bother with a bumper. The baby can't move to start with and by the time they can you have to take it out anyway.

Get 4 fitted sheete, 3 top and 3 blankets. You will be washing so much anyway you shouldn't run out and you have spares for airing too.

I would buy very little and then get more if it's needed.

I've made do with one set on the cot and one in the wash. Never had bumpers just bottom fitted sheet, top flat sheet and blanket. I did use sleeping bags so my cot only had fitted sheet and sleeping bag most of the time. On one occasion due to sickness both sleeping bags were in the wash and i had to use sheet/blanket instead but otherwise always managed fine. Can always use improvise with larger bedding in an emergency!

Thanks Nab, I know bumpers arn't that much use but I love the way they look so will probably still get one. Just been pricing it all up in Babies R Us, I know I should just go for something cheap and practical but I want it all to match and look pretty . You can tell its my first can't you.

When DS was tiny i used moses basket sheet/muslin square on top of bedding so if sick could whip this off and underneath was saved. Best buy for me was mattress with zip off top layer from mothercare. When DS was really sick could zip off soiled section and put in waching machine, wipe down plastic of mattress and make the cot up again!

Agree with the others. One on, one in the wash is fine to start with. If you have a particularly sicky baby then you can buy more if you really need to.

I'd really recommend sleeping bags though, like Chattyhan says, then you only need a couple of bottom sheets. My dcs have all had sleeping bags and I have 1 blanket for emergencies which I've used maybe two or 3 times with 3 babies.

Have a look at Bump to 3. They sell sleeping bags and have lots of info on whic ons to buy depending on how warm your house is, etc. Plus info about what baby needs to wear underneath them.

hummm ... I was thinking about getting sleeping bags anyway, your right I really don't need all the extra blankets and stuff as well do I. Thanks so much for your help, I'd have unthinkingly spent a fortune. I'll just get the matching bumper and sheets and 1 blanket then. Thanks everyone.

mattress covers, fitted sheets, couple of grobags and one or max 2 blankets should do it

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 12:48

I think 2 isn't enough. One on and one in the wash is assuming the baby doesn't mess twice in a day. You can get nappy leaks, possetting, etc etc. Def a minimum of 3-4.

Muslins under baby's head are a life-saver to avoid whole bed changes when they're being icky all the time.

I'd try out a sleeping bag before you buy lots. My LO would only sleep on her tum and the sleeping bag was always over her face, so they didn't work for us. And you can never have too many blankets anyway, useful for in the pram/car etc when it's chilly.

kerioke · 13/09/2007 13:25

i agree with placing a smaller secure sheet or muslin under babies head... i found by doing this i only had to change and wash bedding twice a week rather than 4 times a day and that is no egsageration (sp) at all!!! once i got into the knack of doing htis i found i only needed 2 sets of bedding... and about a hundred muslins!

NAB3 · 13/09/2007 16:28

I was going to suggest the muslin as I soon learnt and would use them in the pram and then the cot, but I wasn't sure whether okay to use from day one.
