Single Artery Umbilical Cord

Hey everyone

So I had my 20 week scan today and everything looks good. There are no obvious issues aside from the fact I have been told that I only have two vessels in the umbilical cord. The sonographer was very calm and said it's nothing to worry about as there were no other issues but I've done some research and it can cause some different things including chromosome disorders.

Has anyone else had this? And what was your experience? Trying not to worry but I am a dreadful worrier.

Thank you.

My second child had this but we didn't know until he was born! And he's absolutely fine. Try not to worry too much

I'm so glad to hear he's good. I think it's just panicked me as it's in the notes as a potential defect but she said herself it's only on there because she has to report or if she sees it. And I'm sure if it was more concerning she would have been upfront about it.

I started a thread on this a while ago as I was told the same at my 20 week scan. Was also told there is no evidence it causes an issue and just happens. I wasn't told I had it with my first but not sure if it was something that was checked 8 years ago.

Am now 34+2 and got my 36 week scan in a couple of weeks.

my dc had this.
sonographer said it could be a marker for other issues but that it is unlikely if the other measurements are normal and organs look ok.
I was invited for an extra scan at 36 weeks for monitoring.

dc is a totally healthy btw.

Thank you so much for the reassurance.

Just in case anyone is here as they are worried- just spoke to my mum who used to work in a maternity ward. She talked to a midwife she used to work with and she actually said this is normally only picked up after birth when the placenta is being examined so there really isn't much to worry about as it's fairly common. It said online it's rare but that likely is just becaise it's rarely picked up on.

Hopefully Raindancer411 your scan goes very well which I'm sure it will and as an added bonus you get another look at your baby before birth.

I just got told this too on Tuesday at my scan I'm 22 weeks. The doctor didn't seem to think it was a big deal as everything else was completely fine. He wanted me to have a blood test so he could look for any genetic markers. I was supposed to have the test right then but they didn't have any test kits left so now waiting for them to call me to come back in.

He said if that came back okay I would probably just have extra scans to keep checking progress.

I had this with my first dd. It was picked up after she was born. She was sent for a scan on her kidneys, or liver. I can't remember which, as this was 35years ago. She's absolutely fine. Please try not to worry Flowers

I'm so glad to hear that @Raindancer411! Congratulations!
Unfortunately in the end my little boy had quite a few issues and it at 31 weeks he was diagnosed with Pataus Syndrome and was born asleep on the 29th of June.
