Not heard from midwives - when should I chase them?

I’m 5+6 today. Called community midwives a week ago to give details and they said they would pass it to my hospital of choice. I know you don’t having a booking appt til about 8 weeks but I haven’t heard anything from hospital yet about appt or scan date. Is this normal? When should I ring up to find out what’s going on? Don’t want to hassle them when it’s so early

I self referred to my hospital and got a letter within a week. Will have my appt at 9.5 weeks. Maybe give it until Monday and then chase.

Lyris · 09/04/2020 09:02

I contacted them at 5 weeks and only got my letters last week (I'm 8 weeks)

I have my phone booking appt today and scan 11th may.

I wondered if I should chase to but they did come through, they must just have a lot going on.

Wait, you’re still very early. They’ll call/write to you in a couple of weeks. Both times I saw my midwife at 10 weeks, not 8, which she said is normal in our area.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 09/04/2020 09:04

They will get in touch, I was waiting for quite some time for mine after self-referral and got seen at 10 weeks, the 8 week mark is not always done in all trusts.

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/04/2020 09:06

You’re still very early. Where I am you can’t even self refer till you’re 6 weeks, I’m now 8 weeks and have just got my booking in appointment for when I’m 11 weeks (I’m guessing they’re a bit over stretched at the moment)

Chanel05 · 09/04/2020 09:07

I think I got my letters at 8 weeks and had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks. It's frustrating waiting when you want to get the ball rolling but not a lot happens until late in the first trimester!

tabbycat985 · 09/04/2020 09:15

Depending on where you are, I believe every area is working differently right now.
My booking appointment is going to be at my 12 week scan even though I'm high risk & in normal circumstances would be getting a couple of early scans!
The trust I'm in also isn't sending out letters, everything's done over the phone to reduce contact

ChainsawBear · 09/04/2020 09:23

Nothing actually needs to happen until the dating scan, which just needs to take place between 11 weeks and 13+6 for greatest accuracy. The booking-in appointment is just a history taking and none of the information gets used until the second trimester. Some trusts do it at the same time as the scan, some do it a few weeks earlier, but either way there is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Nothing happens in the first trimester, it's just a waiting game.

Frustrating: think I’d feel better if I had a date to look forward to! Some times I barely believe im pregnant, if my boobs didn’t hurt so much i think I wouldn’t!

Hmm, I would actually say get in contact - I my referral didn't go through and by the time I followed it up my closest hospital was booked up. I now have to travel over an hour to get to appointments and I live fairly centrally in a major city! Not very happy. It might be worth making sure you're on the system.

sel2223 · 09/04/2020 11:15

The early days of pregnancy are very frustrating.....no one even confirms your pregnancy in the UK, in most areas you bypass the GP completely and you don't see a midwife until you're 9/10 weeks. It's a strange time and not how I imagined it would be before I was pregnant myself.

You just have to be patient, if you haven't heard anything by 7-8 weeks, then ring and chase them up. They're particularly busy with everything going on at the moment and I think a lot of booking appointments are being combined with the dating scan so it may even be longer than 10 weeks for you.

1990shopefulftm · 09/04/2020 11:41

I d give it a couple of weeks then chase, my booking appointment wasn't till 9+6 weeks and was over the phone although they forgot to tell me that so when you get an appointment I would call the day before to check it's still going ahead.
I m having screening bloods they would have done at booking when I go for my scan at 12+5 weeks.

Emerald89 · 09/04/2020 11:41

I think I’ll give it until 7 weeks and then ring up. It’ll be 2 weeks since referral then.

I'm 10 weeks and still don't have a scan date lol! I've just chased today I wouldn't chase too soon

sel2223 · 09/04/2020 11:48

For reference, I self referred around 5 weeks and got my booking in appointment letter at 8 weeks then the actual appointment was at exactly 10 weeks.

My first scan wasn't until 13+6 and I only got the letter for that appointment a week before.

R2D2abc · 09/04/2020 13:04

This is my 4th baby and didn't have my booking appointment until 10 weeks and received the letter a week prior to the appointment. ( that was October last year).

I would say wait and be patient. You'll receive your appointment.
If there is anything urgent about your care they will contact you sooner, otherwise there isn't much to happen at your first appointment apart from filling your history, etc.

Goldenmother · 09/04/2020 13:21

I self referred to my hospital of choice have you checked to see if your local hospital allows you to do that
