In laws want to buy us a moses basket

Hi all - my in-laws decided that the present they would give to baby is a moses basket. They say it is easily transferable between rooms and buys us time to buy a proper cot.

I wanted to buy a travel system and they generally have one carrier which is similar to a moses basket so thought it would be an unnecessary duplication as the kid could nap in the travel system and sleep in a cot. Hence saving the additional moses basket.

Am I saying nonsense? I'm not really sure if my plan is realistic or not..

I liked mine but it was a tenner. DS was a big baby and was ok in it until about 10 weeks.

Let them buy you one ! You might find you like it better . I received a lot of gifts that I didn't think I would use but I ended up using a ton and loved .

We had a crib like this downstairs, £40 and lasts up to six months, much more sturdy than a Moses basket. In the bedroom we have a cot bed, will keep baby in our room until at least 18 months.

My twins were I'm their moses basket until they went into cots in their own room at 7 months. So worth it for me

I loved the Moses basket. So portable. We didn’t have a travel system.

FilthyforFirth · 08/04/2020 17:37

I can't remember what it was called but we had a moses basket from John Lewis which was brilliant and DS, who was 8lbs6 at 38 weeks fit in it until nearly 7 months old.

I really liked it and yes, we did move it up and down stairs, though he mainly slept in his sleepyhead when downstairs.

A Moses basket doesn’t have Much use for long. She’d grown out of it by three months. At the end of the day you guys are going to be making use of it so ask for what makes sense

SerBrienneOfHouseTarth · 08/04/2020 18:16

I agree it's an unnecessary duplication.
We don't have a huge house so I prefer not to have too much stuff, and I didn't fancy humphing a moses basket up and down the stairs so DC1 slept in his pram in the living room during the day when we were there and then we brought him up to bed with us at night where he slept in a crib next to our bed. I never took the carrycot off the pram when it was in the house, just wheeled him in! I got a rain cover for the pram so that was never an issue and it had a wee mattress inside so I could change the sheets.
Our plan for DC2 due in the Summer is to use the same pram downstairs and have a crib upstairs as before (with new mattresses obviously).

SerBrienneOfHouseTarth · 08/04/2020 18:19

@MyDcAreMarvel That's the one we had too! I passed it on to a friend, who passed it on, and it has now seen about ten babies (inc siblings) through the first few months! Sadly we moved away so won't get it again for DC2 but the friend I gave it to is pregnant again and she is getting it back for her DC2! As my Mum would say, it doesn't owe us a penny! Smile

We had a Moses basket for both of ours , they were useful during the day and portable enough to take to other peoples houses etc for visiting . I don’t think we used the carrycot part of our travel systems very much at all but that is probably more about our lifestyle than anything else .

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 18:22

Smile yes mine lasted more than one baby. It’s such a shame it was from mothercare as one second hand ones sell out they will be no more.

We had Moses baskets for the DT’s. They slept in them for the first few months and then we put them in them in their cots in our room until they were six months. By then they were too big for the baskets and we moved their cots into their own rooms. Also ideal for using in different rooms until they were safe to sleep without us in the room.

I had my snuzpod for 7 months with DS and loved it. They just look so tiny and lost in a cot.

I really really really wouldn't recommend a traditional Moses basket. They're so small

As for the Chico next to me...feels very cheap and flimsy compared to the snuzpod

ElectricMistofelees · 08/04/2020 18:46

I do think it depends on your baby. Ours loved the noses basket from the off and didn’t like the next to me crib until she’d grown into it. We did use the pram bassinets as you suggest, but the noses basket was much easier to move around and looked a bit nicer than the pram when we had it downstairs. It also meant we didn’t have to keep taking the pram apart to move the bassinet inside and basically had somewhere to put her when she was upstairs, downstairs and the pram without too much kerfuffle.

MrsH497 · 08/04/2020 18:54

We've got the snuzpod 3 which you can actually take the cot part off the stand and downstairs. Our pram has a carry cot as well but I just didn't fancy it being in the living room. Our house isn't massive so a Moses basket as well seemed a waste of space

Floralnomad · 08/04/2020 20:08

Our Moses basket was quite large but I’m talking about 27 yrs ago so maybe they are smaller now .

Amanduh · 09/04/2020 03:36

Our moses basket was the best thing we bought. Portable, baby had all naps in it and night sleeping, could be directly next to bed at bed height on the stand, could be moved around and taken places easily, up and downstairs and even in the garden. He was in it until six months and used it in the cot too until he was used to the transition. Brilliant.

Yesterdayforgotten · 09/04/2020 07:38

'Our Moses basket was quite large but I’m talking about 27 yrs ago so maybe they are smaller now'

No you can get different sizes. The one I have is large with a secure stand but both DC didnt last long as they didn't like it. We had bought it for downstairs sleeping only but ended up sleeping supervised in a nest downstairs and sleeping upstairs in a next to me which both loved from day 1.

Colouringinbook · 09/04/2020 08:30

If you've got a car getting the travel system carry cot in and out for naps would be a right pain. I found that it was always in the car when I needed it in the house and vice versa. There's enough to carry anyway. On that basis I'd take the moses basket!
