Trouble sleeping in first trimester

I'm currently about 9/10 weeks and pretty much since I found out I was pregnant I've been having trouble sleeping. I usually wake after a few hours sleep and then lie awake for about 3hrs before getting a few more hours. But it's just not enough and I'm exhausted. I've tried going to bed early, forcing myself to stay up late, napping in the day, powering through without a nap in the hope I'm so tired I sleep through....nothing has helped. We've bought a new matress topper and pillows, so at least while I'm lying awake I'm comfy! Anyone else experiencing the same or have any tips?

Yep exactly the same.
I have a sleep disorder and had to stop my meds the day I found out I was pregnant.
I go to bed at 10 and wake around 3. Toss and turn til 5, wide awake til I get up.
Exhausted isn't the word!

It’s normal unfortunately, pregnancy insomnia is a thing. I think it’s natures way to prepare you for what is to come.

There’s no cure that I’m aware of, I’d just sleep whenever you can, I was in bed by 8pm in early pregnancy, so I at least got some hours before midnight

Yes I have exactly the same! I’m 10 weeks too. It’s so annoying.

I’m trying not to nap in the day now, and that has helped.

I also listened to this excellent podcast by Derren Brown, and am going to try and follow his rules:

It's not just first trimester I'm afraid.

I'm 22 weeks tomorrow and have had this throughout my pregnancy....3/4 o clock seems to be a common wake up time for me regardless of when I go to bed. Then I just toss and turn till it's time to get up.

I am the same, I thought it was just because of the anxiety of what's happening and the moment as well as my last pregnancy ending in a MMC x

ZsaZsaMc · 08/04/2020 13:20

Also the same - I’m so grumpy as a result. I’m 12 weeks waking to use the loo/because I’m thirsty and finding it impossible to get back to sleep. Anxiety doesn’t help!

I am exactly the same! I've never had a problem sleeping until a week ago! I'm currently 5+5 so found out I was pregnant 3 days ago. I thought it was because my mind was racing due to obvious reasons 🙈 I've tried playing sleep sounds with Alexa which seem to help but now I listen to them until they go off (they're an hour long) it's frustrating because I am so tired too! The past 2 days I've napped during the day so I've tried to hold off today. Fingers crossed for a better nights sleep tonight 🤞🏻 hope you ladies manage to get some sleep and are well rested 😴

Mee! I'm 12 weeks today, at the beginning I couldn't sleep for worrying (pregnant after MC), now I just can't sleep for a length of time!
Doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I can't fall asleep until 11/12, I then wake between 3.30 and 5am everyday for a wee... Then that's it, I'm awake!
Averaging around 4/5 hours sleep a night for the past 4 weeks. I'm too exhausted to do a thing during the day and have a pretty much permanent headache!

Jadegkeaney · 19/04/2020 01:45

I had the same, it started before I found out I was pregnant which was about 4 weeks. It's the pregnancy hormones unfortunately. I have got better now, I am 12 weeks but end up getting up a couple of times to wee.

3rd trimester here. Wide awake and pissing about 10 times a night Angry

Mummsnett · 19/04/2020 05:03

I've currently 28 wks with second baby, and have had pregnancy insomnia both times, from pretty much the beginning of each pregnancy. Can confirm it stops when the baby arrives... Although then you have a newborn keeping you up all night!!
I find I have it a few nights in a row and then will be so exhausted I'll sleep great the following night. Sometimes listening to hypnobirthing affirmations or a mindfulness track on YouTube can help.
In a way not having to do the daily commute & WFH thanks to COVID-19 is a blessing when you're running on less sleep!

I feel for you! I didn’t have this during 1st trimester (found it hard staying awake instead!).

I’m 16 weeks now, and I started getting pregnancy insomnia from about week 12. I found getting a pregnancy pillow to be very useful as I had started getting uncomfortable, and having a Luke warm bath really helps to relax me. Also when I wake up in the night now I try and not let it stress me out, I just find something to do with the time until I feel I can fall back to sleep (instead of laying there waiting for it to happen). That’s probably easier for me to say since my 1st trimester exhaustion has faded away now, I don’t even wanna think what it’s doing to you ladies in 1st trimester!

I would say sleep when you can, if you can have a nap during the day then do it (especially since trying to avoid it hasn’t worked). Your body is working so hard, you need to get sleep when you can.

I’m the same. Came off anti sickness meds and now can’t sleep. 11+1. Been off sick 5 weeks and going back tomorrow WFH with 19 month old and DH also WFH - fuck knows how and now with no sleep
