high BMI and MMC - Terrified!!

Hi guys, first post here so please be kind!

Having a slow burning meltdown at the minute about my chances of MMC.

I've extremely high BMI (42) due to PCOS and recently got the shock of our lives by ending up pregnant, after being convinced it wouldn't happen for us!
I found out at 5 weeks, and I've had some symptoms (slight nausea, very sore nipples, bloating etc) but they come and go.
Since I found out we were pregnant I've been constantly stressing that on my 12 week scan I'm going to find out I've had a MMC.
I know that without bleeding, or a scan there's no reason to assume that I'll lose baby but is there anyone out there who has had a successful pregnancy with High BMI and PCOS?

Any help would really help me calm down!

Hello duck!
I'm a chunker with PCOS. I have had 5 pregnancies. 1 full term, 2 terminations, 1 missed miscarriage and one chugging along at 20 weeks.
PCOS hasn't been an issue for me during any of these pregnancies and not everyone with PCOS or a high BMI will have a complicated pregnancy.

They'll want to check you for GD, so you'll have a test for that and might need extra follow up scans for it.

You might fall under consultant lead care, but that means that they will be faster acting if you do have any concerns.

With my MMC I suspected it because of a complete lack of symptoms, after feeling rough as balls in the time leading up to it.

However, I also experienced that in this pregnancy and went for a reassurance scan to find all was well.

You can't know anything until you know it. Relax, drink some decaf tea, put your feet up and enjoy being pregnant.

Congratulations.

I've got PCOS and a higher BMI than you and had 5 pregnancies (2 miscarriages and 3 very easy pregnancies).
High BMI definitely doesn't mean you will have a hard or bad pregnancy in my experience, but be prepared to have more appointments and monitoring.
I never had diabetes or anything, but I did have to have blood-thinning injections which I think is given to everyone over a certain BMI now.

@crackerscheesescabbyknees

Thank you for responding, I've had symptoms disappear and panicked, only for them to come back a few days later, Sore Boobs (sorry if TMI!) has been constant since about two days after positive test!

I've already confided in one friend, who said if there's no bleeding and no serious pain to try and chill but it's easier said than done!

Annoyed as I always thought I'd pay for a private scan around this time just to keep me going until 12 weeks, but don't want to be selfish during the lock-down, only leaving the house once a day to walk dogs!

Hope you, bump and family are staying safe Smile

@purpleghost

With this being my first, I'm just so nervous and struggling to enjoy this time even though it's what I've always dreamt of!

Being super good since my BFP and eating loads of fruit and veg and stop smoking cold turkey, just need it to be scan day already!

Thanks Flowers

@Rara88Cas
You're doing great.and I'm sure your little bundle will be fine and wriggling at your scan. You need to relax though. One thing that's bad for pregnancy is stress.
Happier you are, happier baby is!

@crackerscheesescabbyknees

Thank you! I think I have had it drilled into my by docs treating my PCOS how high my risk is for MC that I'm letting it take over!

Everytime I hear from a mummy in a similar boat it makes me breathe a sign of relief!

Currently 32 weeks pregnant, 1st pregnancy (no losses fortunately), have PCOS and my BMI is way higher than yours as I have Lipoedema as well. Same as you, was a smoker until I found out I was pregnant - quit immediately.

Baby is perfectly healthy and happy so far - couple of bumps in the road but that was more to do with me than him. I've lost weight in fact due to a number of factors.

The only thing I would be mindful of, is gestational diabetes later on which I do have but has been very manageable through diet alone and was only borderline in the first place.

I worried myself sick due to being considered 'high' risk - take that term as a positive as all it means is you and baby will be extra looked after all the way through. And try not to let doctors scare you and ask them to tell you the positive stories as well rather than all the horrible stuff. They have a tendency to give you absolute worse case scenario when actually the likelihood of those situations happening are still relatively low.

@Meadows89

Thank you so much for your post!
So pleased to hear you and bump are happy and healthy!

Sorry to hear you've not had the most straight forward pregnancy, I think there's a strong chance I could end up with GD due to size and diabetes in my family, already super thirsty all the time - but I've been told this early on it's just due to increased blood flow as much as anything, but I'll keep an eye on it!

Pleased I'm not the only one worried, I will try my best and enjoy the next few weeks otherwise it's going to be a long 5+weeks until my scan!

stay safe Flowers

Don't have a similar experience to share, but re: private scans... a lot of places are still doing wellbeing checks. I know Window to the Womb are. I know you want to follow the social distancing guidelines but if you're really worried then it might be worth the tiny risk - you're going to be putting your body and baby under a lot of stress if you're this anxious. I recommend waiting until at least 9 weeks though to get some really nice images of baby moving around ☺

Meadows89 · 07/04/2020 20:11

@Rara88Cas That's ok :) honestly it's normal to worry, especially if like me you were told for years that falling pregnant would not be a thing that would be easy.

Like some others have advised, an wellbeing scan privately might give you some comfort. We had early scans as we had no idea of dates and then I had two bleeds - by 12 weeks I think I'd had 4 scans. 3 NHS and 1 private. The private scan allowed me to ask the questions I didn't have a chance to ask at EPU.

Let us know how you get on :)

Rara88Cas · 08/04/2020 09:57

@meadows89

I might look into a scan in a few weeks if things haven't changed, just to keep me going!

I'll keep you posted!

@Rara88Cas first of all congratulations I have 2 children and 7 years ago I was diagnosed with pcos I also have a high BMI I'm 33 anything over 30 is high I've been told I had a miscarriage a few months before I was diagnosed so I had given up on having any more children and was grateful for the 2 I had in the first year of miscarriage I was obsessed with getting pregnant again it never happen and I accept it and was sure I couldn't have anymore children that is until octorber last year I found out I was pregnant 7 years later, I've had a few bleeds along the way but my little boy is doing great I'm 30 weeks now and I've constantly worried something bad will happen but that because you want this so much, please try not to stress and enjoy it as much as you can. Regarding my high BMI my midwife put me on aspirin which I have to take every night at from 28 weeks I've had to inject myself to prevent any blood clots.

Rara88Cas · 08/04/2020 13:20

Thanks @Goldenmother I've been prescribed aspirin but been told not to take until I'm 12 weeks! scared to pick it up much before I'm 12 weeks in case I'm jinxing things!
Just wish you could have a weekly scan to make sure everything was ok! Grin

@Rara88Cas once you get to 28 weeks you will have growth scabs every 3 weeks like I'm having you will be fine try not to stress yourself to much hun it will all be fine

Addler · 08/04/2020 17:24

I'm in a similar boat, high BMI and PCOS. My BMI has gone way way down from what it used to be, I had a gastric sleeve operation nearly two years ago and my BMI is now under 40 but not by much! I wish I had got it down lower before getting pregnant.

One good thing is it's given me the kick I needed to get my diet and exercise back on track.
