Plus Size / Overweight during pregnancy?

Hi all

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Just wanted to reach out, to see if there are any mummies or mummies to be who were plus size/overweight during their pregnancy? Or even beforehand when TTC.

I've recently found out I was pregnant (last week) and I'm about 4 stone overweight. I'm worried about all sorts of aspects, including, will my pregnancy be healthy? Will they be able to scan me? And all other ridiculous anxieties.

Would love to speak to other plus size ladies about their experiences.

Hope to hear from you soon

Zoe

Yes, my BMI was 41 at booking in. It was fine, extra tests and scans but no complications in my case. I have since lost weight.

Thanks for the reply jasmine! Glad to hear it all went good. How many extra scans etc did you get please?

Hello!

I am 14 weeks and a high BMI. I was very worried about getting into trouble etc. but everyone has been very nice. So far I had increased folic acid, a consultant appointment and I will have a GD test in june and additional growth scans.

From my consultant appointment she was happy and said I didnt need to see her again until 37 weeks (unless anything was wrong or I was worried) so it was really made as no big deal.

I was worried about scans but I've not seen any difference between mine and anyone elses. So, should be absolutely fine. I've had two so far (8 weeks and 13 weeks) both abdominal and both easy.

I was about 50lbs down, but last year was tough and emotional eating and sad about not being preggers was getting to me. Then, of course, I was super guilty when it happened but seems fine so far. I lost some weight initially as bad morning sickness but it's back on and more as beige food really helps. Hoping in the next few weeks it lifts and can get a bit more healthy and exercise more. Least lockdown means I don't have to worry about looking massive ;)

Good luck! You'll be absolutely fine and I'm happy to message if you're worried about anything

Hi! I had the same concerns, my BMI at booking appointment was 37, and I was prescribed extra folic acid and aspirin. Otherwise there's been nothing out of the ordinary than my friends with a healthy BMI. My scam pictures haven't been as clear as others but the screen images when in the room were clear to me, so I'm not sure how much of that is the sonographer not taking the time to take clearer pics or not.

I was told I was going to have extra scans and appointments, however as my BMI is not over 40, they have all been cancelled.

My BMI is hefty (34.2).
They pressed a little harder during early pregnancy during the scan but other than that it's been smooth sailing tbh.

I was v overweight (still am ☹️). About 16-17 stone & all was fine.

So this was one of my main worries bmi 46.... I hadn't planned to get pregnant however very happy about it x
Due to my weight and age 4th pregnancy and high bp I had to start clexane from 14 weeks which if you do have them don't stress easy to do and don't hurt just abit stingy.
Scans I have 12 week 20week then another 3 spaces out over the next weeks I'm due in September so works out scan in may June July and August. To be honest I'm glad I'm consultant led as having regular appointments whereas most ladies now with the situation as it is don't get seen regularly.

Clear scan pics..... Mine were not great however got to see better picture live ones they printed were not really clear....drink as much as your bladder can hold!! It gives for a better image. Midwife found heartbeat around 16 weeks not low where expected was quite high up and only by chance.... So keep in mind if you feel any flutters to point that way when they do listen as if anything like me there's alot to listen past!! Blush

I mean I’m technically overweight, although I’m only a size 8-10. No extra care, clear scan images. The only thing that annoys me is the judgement and the midwife not taking on board my worries. I’ve not gained anywhere near the required weight, even for being overweight and all my midwife cares about is if my BMI goes over 30, I’ve gained 5lbs in nearly 33 weeks of pregnancy, I’m up less than a bmi point. (From 26.3-27.2) she doesn’t accept my concerns over baby and just says that I’m overweight so don’t need to gain weight as I have enough extra already. But I’m only just overweight and I truly don’t look it anyway, and the reason I’m struggling is I still have occasional morning sickness and baby is squashing my tummy and so I’m struggling to even meet 1200 calories a day.

Sorry went off on a tangent, but just be aware you will probably receive judgement. Try your best not to take it to heart

Hi all.

My BMI at booking (at 14 weeks, was late to hospital due to moving) was 37. Been prescribed aspirin.

I was 15 stone 9 when I fell pregnant (having lost 6 stone in a year) and weighted the same at that 14 week appointment.

I’m 19 weeks now and weigh 15.7

I’ve never gained weight in either of my two previous pregnancies though (but was ‘normal’ Bmi in those, the weight gain was after my second!) combination of horrible sickness and nausea and wanting to be careful.

I don’t intend to gain any weight in this one either. Just concentrating on eating fruit and veg and protein.

Not gaining weight is fine for the baby, especially being overweight anyway.

Dreading the GTT test, I feel nauseous enough without drinking that shite!

I'm in the same boat and currently 21 weeks. I had all the worries you have now, but please don't worry apart from the extra scans and having to take vit d and asprin everything is normal. Scans were done with ease and very clear pictures of the lil one. I think my pride took a bit of a hitting more than anything else. I have no other medical conditions apart from a BMI of 36. My midwife has said if I stay the way I am and don't have any other issues during pregnancy she has no issues with me being on the birthing unit or even a home birth (covid 19 depending). Its hard because it makes you feel different to everyone else and that you'll loosing out of a perfect pregnancy because your overweight but please don't let that affect the way you feel. Enjoy your pregnancy and embrace those curves ❤❤

Firstly, congratulations!!

There’s a great Facebook group you can join called ‘UK plus size pregnancy and beyond’ which is helpful and reassuring.
Depending on your BMI they will likely just keep an extra eye on you, but please don’t worry the majority of plus size ladies have straight forward pregnancies and births. Do not waste your time worrying about your weight, just enjoy being pregnant and take care of yourself and your little one ❤️
