Sore hips when sleeping - any tips?

I’m 34 weeks and over the past week or so, I’ve been waking up every half hour in total agony in my hips, and pains shooting down the sides of my legs. I swap sides until it becomes unbearable on that side, then I swap back, and so on and so forth.
I already have a comfy mattress, a thick mattress topper and a huge U shaped pregnancy pillow that I put between my knees.
Has anyone got any other hints or tips to help ease this pain and pressure in my hips?
Thank you!

Watching cause I'm also having a loss of sleep dur to hip pain 😔

Greenmarmalade · 05/04/2020 19:44

I used to experiment with pillows under hips and between knees. There are also yoga moves that can help... maybe have a look on YouTube?

Im starting to get uncomfortable hips and am only 24 weeks 😬

Would second yoga, particularly pidgeon pose - that sorts me out for a few days

I've had a sore hip today Sad I put a hot water bottle on it which helps

R2D2abc · 05/04/2020 19:56

I'm the same, 36+4 here.
Baby is past 7lb so my PGP is worse during the day too.
I will start reusing my hot water bottle at night.
Literally rolling from one side to the other because of the pain.

Not long to go.

I found keeping ankles, knees, elbows and wrists together, and using pillows between my knees and elbows to keep the upper arm and leg at shoulder and hip width so my back was straight helped. So the upper arm and leg don't drop and make the back twist iyswim?

A pregnancy yoga teacher gave me a great tip which worked for me. If you have a spare duvet, fold it up and place it under your flat sheet on the bed and sleep on top of it. Basically, your mattress is too hard for your fussy pregnant hips! Hope it works.

I stopped using a pregnancy pillow and used a standard much thinner pillow between my knees which made my aches much better. Everyone is designed differently - might be worth experimenting?

I'm 29 weeks and also exactly the same @OP - tossing and turning all night. I do take paracetamol sometimes when it's bad. Maybe need to look at some of these yoga poses. A MW also told me to try sitting with toes pointing onwards so big toes touch each other for a while each day to "re-set" hips. Not very comfy when you're doing it but apparently it helps. I still get pain though but maybe it would be worse if I wasn't doing it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I used a BBHugMe pregnancy pillow/bolster on its tightest/firmest setting between my knees and ankles and it was a massive relief.

Spinbaby · 05/04/2020 21:20

Thanks all!
Definitely going to look at the yoga poses, never even considered that. The pregnancy pillow is always between my knees in a similar way to a pillow and it doesn’t go wandering like a normal pillow does through the night. Going to try a nice soft pillow under my hips tonight. My shoulders get sore on the side I’m sleeping on too 😫 next 6 weeks can’t go fast enough

I have been experiencing this for the last 1-2 weeks and I’m only 18 weeks! Second pregnancy and didn’t have this before this early (didn’t have PGP or any issues really). I’ve tried a pillow in between my legs but it doesn’t seem to help. I like the idea of trying a folded duvet underneath the sheet, I’m going to give that a go.

MrsRose2018 · 05/04/2020 21:50

Oh my god OP, it’s like you wrote that post on my behalf!

In fact I posted something near identical a few days ago asking how bad it really was to sleep on your back because that was the only brief respite from the relentless burning ache I get in my hips/back/knees when I sleep!

Sadly I genuine think it’s one of those things you just accept with pregnancy and have to soldier on through!

What I will say is if I take my preggy pillow on our sofa - biiiig soft leather one - I can sleep on my left with zero pain! This makes me think It’s the pressure of your mattress regardless of how soft/comfy it is!

Also hot water bottle on your hips is BLISS xx

Have you got a different bed in your house you can try? Normally I sleep on a single mattress on the floor in my daughters room (because I’m basically a complete mug) and I hadn’t had any hip pain at all this pregnancy. This week I moved back into our double bed and it’s come on full force. I tried the single mattress again, and no pain at all. I had it really badly last time and I’m starting to think it was down to the mattress. Unlike everyone else it seems like the former mattress actually stops my hip pain whereas our lovely memory foam topped double mattress makes it much worse.
Also keep as active as possible during the day. I’m 33 weeks and doing lots of yoga type stuff, up and down regularly, lots of stairs and am finding that though constant movement makes me tired, it also makes me ache a lot less.

I went through this last pregnancy and slept on a load of pillows ontop of my mattress.

maybae · 06/04/2020 08:33

Hi there

I’m also 34 weeks pregnant and have had the same issue start in the last week or two.

I tried absolutely everything, stretches, duvet under sheet, memory foam mattress topper, warm bath before bed, magnesium gel rubbed into side before sleep, pillow between the legs, pillows around me. None of it helped!

After chatting with my husband he felt the pain I was experiencing was more sciatic in its nature. Which sounds quite similar to how you describe yours. I was waking up every hour in pain on my left side (from my left buttock, spreading all the way down my left leg) and it also felt numb!

After 3 nights of practically zero sleep I hit breaking point and contacted my midwife and doctor who advised medication was needed. They recommended cocodamol. Obviously I was hesitant to take this however they reassured me it was ok at this stage in my pregnancy and the small risk of me taking it compared to having no sleep and energy was warranted. Completely personal choice but I can honestly say although I’m still having broken sleep it’s so much more manageable if I take just 2 cocodamol before bed.

I really sympathise with you and hope you find relief soon!

Xxx

Oh I forgot to add that I also changed by to my original mattress which is more firm! And that seems to have helped also.
