Should I try for another baby if I am (ahem...very) overweight?

Here it is - dd will be 2 in a few weeks and dh and I would love to have another baby soon as we don't want too big of an age gap.

However... I weigh 16st. With dd I'd lost 3st before I got pregnant but ate so much I put it all back on and more besides. I've now managed to lose 2st (and still losing weight).

So what should I do?

I know that If I were to get pregnant I wouldn't eat as stupidly as I did with dd.

I know that there are also health risks involved although with dd there were no complications at all, it was a good pregnancy and birth.

So should I lose weight first meaning there'll be a bigger age gap or just go for it and concentrate on losing weight afterwards?

I'd love advice from anyone who has been or is in a similar situation.

Thanks

I haven't bought any maternity clothes at all. I have just bought my tops a size bigger in Evans and i'm currently still in my normal trousers (i have a small waist and large thighs so buy a size bigger to fit them!).

I was also a 20/22 top and 24 bottom before i got pg.

Go for it girl. Like alot of posters have said the MW's will monitor you anyway. I was (still am) overweight with my DS but seemed to lose loads while pregnant and BF helped lose even more!

Well done for losing 2 stone BTW!

Another echo for Next maternity wear - brilliant!

I got pregnant with ds at your weight. I was 30. I am 5foot 5 I had a natural birth with no pain relief and loved being pregnant. (WHat I didn't like was the fact that I felt bullied throughout my pregnancy by the medical profession because of my weight - but that is another story). I was very active and ate healthily before & throughout(always did just ate far too much ) As for clothes I bought some stuff from Blooming marvellous.

Thanks scoop. To be honest, if the only negative factor I had in ttc was my weight, I'd be jumping for joy! Best of luck to you. My ds is 2.2 so I'll race you and - who knows - maybe we'll be in the same antenatal club?!

kerioke · 12/09/2007 17:35

hiya scoopmuckanddizzy (typing that took some effort!) firstly well done on shifting 2 stone i am envious!!

i started ttc knowing i was overweight (i was then 14 stone) and when i concieved 8 months later my weight hadnt changed much either way, but oh my how i wish i had lost some! the main reason id idnt was silly logic from people saying it was pointless to loose only to pile on in pregnancy... well now i am 6 months pregnant and have gained over 2 stone so far already! so i have gone from large to huge and the strain is really showing... my blood pressure isnt great, my ankles have dissappeared and given way to 'cankles', my back, hips and pelvis are killing me and although baby is perfectly happy just now i am struggling... and i have the most aggressive growth part of pregnancy ahead of me!

i would say medically its always best to enter pregnancy healthy, but we all know how well us women cope regardless right?? but personally i really wish i had got myself to around 12 stone at least before ttc... i guess i just didnt have enough patience!

good luck whatever you choose and dont let your ttc journey get you too down as with every roller coaster there eventually comes a settled end!

kerioke · 12/09/2007 17:39

oh lord! no i have rad the whole thread rather than the op and armed with the WW info i am off to my local meeting pronto and am telling you to go for it!!!

after all whats more important... those little people who call us mummy and love us no matter who we are or a few inches off our thighs??!!

scoopmuckanddizzy · 12/09/2007 20:23

Tribpot - the race is on!!!

kerioke - I'm just going to carry on eating healthily and be motivated by the fact that I could be prgnant very soon.

Thanks again for everyone's advice xxx

I was around 16st when I became pregnant with first baby and 17 stone with second. There is nothing to stop you dieting while you try to conceive. Both of my pregnancies were fine but my DD was born at 29 weeks - I secretly blame myself because I was so fat. Luckly she is now a fantastic 2 year old with no medical problems at all. Good luck!

scoopmuckanddizzy · 12/09/2007 20:47

Thanks Chip Butty, did you put much weight on whilst you were pregnant?

Hi, sorry haven't read the whole thread, I have been overweight forever, was overweight when I got pregnant with 1st dc and slightly more overweight with 2nd dc.

I think tbh that unless you are very confident that you can lose weight quickly that you should just go for it, the only problems I had during pregnancy were high blood sugars. I had several GTT's during both pregnancies which were conclusively negative, not even borderline, so go figure.

I found that because I was overweight professionals assumed I would have a large child which is a bit silly (7lb14 and 9lb10) well maybe not so silly in the second case lol.

I found it embarassing being weighed etc when I was towards full term, but hey ho. Actually I found that I weighed basically the same as I was pre-pregnancy not long after birth, so didn't actually put body fat on during pregnancy. Although my saggy belly tells a different story

I think problems can strike any pregnancy, and if you really want a child just have one. You can put it off until all the circumstances are just right but this is never likely to happen,

Good luck
Jo

Oh and btw I actually lost weight whilst pregnant with dd. It's the only time in my life I actually feel comfortable with my body, the huge belly makes everything else feel so much smaller

ChipButty · 12/09/2007 21:09

Lost weight when pregnant as I couldn't abuse my body like I normally did by overeating: I couldn't do it to my longed for babies! Was prob half a stone lighter each time. Soon put it back on and more!

scoopmuckanddizzy · 12/09/2007 21:19

It's good to hear about weight losses during pregnancy!

I can't bear the thought of being any bigger than I am now.

I didn't put on on very much weight at all, I was back in non-maternity clothes pretty much as soon as I had given birth. Just me and Victoria Beckham, eh?!?! But for rather different reasons.

miniandme · 13/09/2007 11:31

I was 16 stone when i fell pg this time round, have since found out im expecting twins and have been paranoid about the amoutn of weight im gonna put.was overweight with all my other 3 pgs but not by this much,i have put on 16lbs so far and im almost 20 weeks gone.
I too lost 2 stone before falling pg but will get back on the wagon after the twins are here!! Oh andim only 5'3

Hoonette · 14/09/2007 13:58

I was about five stone overweight when I had my baby, and the midwives weren't at all bothered about it. I kept mentioning it to them and they said it didn't matter. I had no complications at all with the pregancy or labour.

I also lost weight during the first trimester (think it was giving up the booze!) Put on about 1.5 stone during pregnancy, and was back to pre-pregancy weight two weeks after giving birth, despite eating a lot of chocolate (Just wish I could lose the rest of the weight that quickly!)

So good luck - I'm sure all will be well
