Two antenatal appointments?

Hi, I’m 12 weeks pregnant and have just received my first dating scan for next week. In the same envelope they’ve sent me another appointment I wasn’t expecting for 5 days later.
Does anyone know what this second one is for? My other pregnant friends said they’ve only had one.
Worried!

Does it say who the second appointment is with?
I had 2 appointments a week apart: one was with a sonographer (the scan) and the second was with an obstetrician (consultant).

LouisaPipSqueak · 04/04/2020 12:47

Yes - first letter just sonographer and the second a consultants name... is it bad news?

No, it just means you were referred to a consultant at your booking in appointment with the midwife. This can be for a huge variety of things relating to your own health, your families or partners health, previous pregnancies/births, bmi. Did the midwife not mention anything to you?

It's a fairly standard appointment to decide what your care will be, if you have any extra needs, if you're likely to need extra monitoring etc. You may then be referred straight back to having midwife led care or they might keep you as consultant led. It's genuinely nothing to worry about and is unrelated to the 12 week scan.

I wouldn’t say this is bad news. You may be seeing a consultant if you have any risk factors for pregnancy-age, weight, family history, medical conditions (did you mention any at your midwife booking appointment?) I saw a consultant at 20 weeks as mine is an ivf pregnancy. Try not to worry -if anything it’s great you are being kept a closer eye on with a consultant.

LouisaPipSqueak · 04/04/2020 12:57

Oh thank god for that! Thank you for stopping me panicking all week! I was terrified they may have found something in my bloods that they needed to discuss.
My midwife never said a thing but I wasn’t very impressed with her anyway.
No health problems or anything but my baby was IVF due to my partners vasectomy reversal not working. Could that be why?
Thank you again for putting me at ease. I didn’t even know you could be consultant led, I just assumed we’d be midwife led.

Snap @mouse1234567! :)
We’re you referred back to the midwife or kept consultant led?

@LouisaPipSqueak I’m sure that’s it -I think most IVF patients are put straight to consultant led. So I had one appointment at twenty weeks with consultant and haven’t seen her since. I have seen sonographers because I have low Papp a and need growth scans but that is completely separate. If I wasn’t having growth scans I would purely be seen my midwifes now. Good luck

LouisaPipSqueak · 05/04/2020 07:02

Ah ok, great thank you. Wish my midwife said.
Thanks again and good luck to you!

Hi Louisa I had the same issue yesterday when I received a date for my 12 week scan. They sent a letter to say that I had a consultant appointment a week after it. I did panic but then thought it was maybe because I had an EMCS with my first. My husband suggested it was because of the COVID 19 stuff but who knows. Are you midlands based by any chance?

LouisaPipSqueak · 05/04/2020 16:14

Hi @hellosun20
No, I’m in Newcastle.
My husband thought it was cos of covid too - suppose I’ll just have to wait and see. I’m just relieved other people have it and it’s not cos they’ve found something in my blood etc that they need to discuss. That was panicking me the most - especially when my other friends never had a consultant appointment.

Sounds like it’s to discuss if any extra care is needed if were are a little riskier?...

Yes you will usually be referred to a consultant for an ivf pregnancy. Mine is ivf. Sometimes you are discharged from consultant if straight forward and are midwife led throughout the pregnancy sometimes you carry on with consultant. Please don’t worry. Good luck at scan.

LouisaPipSqueak · 05/04/2020 16:24

Great to hear! Thanks so much for reassuring me @whatelsecouldibecalled.
Obviously a much wanted first baby and I’m worried about receiving bad news and having the carpet pulled from beneath me! All seems to good to be true right now Grin

Hi, I had two appointments aswell because I am consultant led (diabetes), indeed I've had loads of appointments with various consultants and the letters always say with a 'member of the obstetrics team' . If you are worried, just call the number on the letter and ask them, the receptionist should be able to see the reason for the referral and it might put your mind at rest Smile

sel2223 · 05/04/2020 16:30

It won't be for Covid, they're trying to reduce appointments because of that, not increase them so a lot of consultant appointments and midwife appointments are being postponed or cancelled....or bring done via telephone.
IVF is a reason for referral, so is a previous EMCS. My referral was because of an existing health condition and I know a friend was referred because of a genetic issue/something from when her mother was pregnant with her.

Cannyhandleit · 05/04/2020 16:31

Is it your booking appointment?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 05/04/2020 16:47

@LouisaPipSqueak i totally get it it’s a mad journey with ivf. Your consultant will just discuss care pathway. You’ve said it’s MFI so will hopefully just be referred back to midwife x

Secretsout · 05/04/2020 16:57

It's because of Covid. We have been asked to reduce the number of appointments as best we can so if you can see the sonographer and ante-natal clinic at the same time so that everything can be done at once at this stage it will minimise your (and staff) contact.

sel2223 · 05/04/2020 17:02

@Secretsout the OP said it's 2 appointments a week apart.
