How to cope with extreme hunger

Hi all

I’m only 9 weeks pregnant and I can’t cope with this extreme hunger, I’ve already eaten weetabix, a banana and some cake this morning and it’s not even 9am!!!

I’ve gained 1 stone in weight since being pregnant and I’m really concerned, I’m doing my best to try and limit my eating but my stomach just feels constantly empty - even straight after eating!

Does anyone have any tips to help me through? Not sure what else I can try! If I’m hungry it then makes me sick if I don’t eat and gives me bad heartburn but I’m seriously concerned at the weight gain so early on :(

Would drinking fizzy drinks help? I just worry with the heartburn fizzy would not help me...

I think ice lollies is a sign of low iron.

My anemia didn't show up until they did a finger prick test in my thrird trimester.

Being dizzy all the time is how I was too. The only time I felt OK was when I was eating.

Maybe check with the midwife see if you can get an iron test.

@Catherine1210 interesting.. I think I’ll be switching to porridge as I actually love porridge so thanks for that :-)

@Pulpfiction1 I will give my doctor a call in the morning and see if they will test me for iron as I’m not due to see midwife for another 6 weeks and my GP is pretty good at getting me in.. I guess I could just get some iron supplements, would it hurt to take them whilst I wait to find out?

@luckyme30 Many pregnancy vitamins contain iron to prevent anaemia - maybe check what you're already taking and see about adding in a dose? The liquid iron (Floradix is quite good) is more gentle on the stomach as the tablets can cause digestive issues if you've got history of IBS or anything (also I think harder to take too much? unsure). It's very easy for women who don't eat red meat regularly to get iron-deficient. Beans and spinach are great but the body doesn't digest the iron so easily from plant sources. Anaemia is also a gradual thing, so maybe look at your diet over the last 2 months and if it looks low in iron try and add some in. I get anaemia about once every 8-10 months because I don't really eat meat and forget to take supplements!

@seventhrow all I am taking is folic acid and vitamin d3 (have been on a high dose for a while and doc advised to continue with it through pregnancy).

I’m going to have a look and see if I can get hold of any Floradix to be delivered, I think it’s worth a shot.

I barely eat read meat so it’s quite likely I’m not getting enough iron in my diet.

I'm veggie that's why i was low on iron and I only took my pregnancy vitamins for the first trimester.

Id take the liquid iron and maybe a pregnancy multi vitamin.

I had this in my most recent pregnancy (turned out to be twins). I found eating much bigger breakfasts, then hardly touching lunch (small snacks and lots of water instead), then a large dinner worked best. Mornings were by far the toughest. I think I was ravenous from an entire night spent not eating! I was actually lighter right after giving birth than before I got pregnant as the baby/ies push against your stomach and don't leave much room for eating by the end, so it evens out.

Just another one stopping by to say you are not alone Smile

I had the same but as others have said, it passed by the 2nd trimester. I just took healthy snacks to work - skyr and babybel worked for me. Also low fat cheese spread on an oatcake or two.
