When to start thinking of buying things through this pandemic?

Hi ladies.

Originally I planned on starting to look for things from about 26/27 weeks.
I'm currently 23 weeks tomorrow and I just wonder what the availability on big things like cots, prams etc.. is going to be like & if these company's are actually still working.
I don't want to leave things to last minute and find I can't get anything on time.

What is everyone else doing?

Don’t mean to panic you but I would start now. I’m 30 weeks and have been trying to buy baby clothes. Next online shop is closed. M&S sold out of everything. Sainsbury’s TU, H&M and ASDA George very low stock. John Lewis and places like mamas and papas still have stuff but it’s expensive for basics. I don’t know about the big stuff (Amazon still working but they don’t have clothes in stock) but maybe think about buying clothes.

I wasn’t going to get much until a few weeks before due date (I’m 29+5 now) but as soon as schools shut I picked up clothes, nappies and other basics so we can get through the first 2-3 months if we can’t get deliveries by then. My instincts were right I feel, as not long after that I started to get some emails from places like next etc putting a stop to online shopping and had trouble getting supplies from supermarkets. My cousin who is also expecting had put a deposit down on her pram with the test payable when she collected it but they delivered it to her last week as they are closing now aswell. Don’t panic, there are still things available but I would pick up the essentials when you can, I think this will get worse before it starts to get better x

I'm almost 22 weeks and I've bought quite a lot of things already, one because it helped spread the cost, but mostly now because like PP advises a lot of online shops are selling out of newborn basics.
My pram is arriving today. I already have a cot, I've bought the majority of clothing in first size, bought bottles, prep machine, muslins.

I would start seriously thinking about gathering some items together, fingers crossed as we get closer to the due date the situation will be much better, but I'm too much of a organised person to take that risk haha.

I'm 28+5, we had big bits early on (already had cot, got the pram just as Mothercare shut etc), but I have been ordering quite a bit over the last couple of weeks.

I've managed to order, and have delivered, cot mattress, newborn size clothes, and a changing mat. I've also had the supplies to redecorate the nursery.

Online orders have worked ok so far but there is less choice, it's not as nice as really seeing and choosing things, and there don't seem to be any baby events / sales etc in any of the retailers.

I'm really hoping this is over before baby arrives, but I'm attempting to prepare in case it isn't. That has included buying more than we would have done, as I'm not sure that we will see family who have probably bought clothes etc.

I would start now.
I'm 26 weeks and think we are now organised.
Ordered pram a while ago from our local pram shop.
Being picking up clothing, nappies etc from Tesco/Asda when go shopping and ordered some stuff from M&S and Debenhams.

Got moses basket ordered through Amazon and it came yesterday.

Aldi have a baby special buy event coming up very soon and they do home delivery for special buys.

JoCF42 · 03/04/2020 11:24

Again, I don't want to panic you but I would start now. We already had bought quite a lot as had been to the Baby Show and it is our first so had nothing but when things started to shut down I ordered all the last bits online. There was already less availability and things sold out. Now only have nappies to get which I will leave until nearer the time.

pollypocketrocket · 03/04/2020 11:36

Ok thank you everyone I think I shall knuckle down and start ordering.

Does anyone have any recommendations on best online sights ?
And makes of prams ?
And also do you think the travel systems are worth it that come with the car seat that goes on pram ?

Im new to all this :) first time mum ☺️

I'm 21 weeks and hadn't intended to buy anything till I was at least 6 months gone but I panicked when the advice first came for us to start social distancing and i saw other countries on full lockdown etc. I ended up buying a travel system and snuzpod crib 2 days before the shop shut until further notice. I'm so glad I did. The small stuff I'm not so bothered about but I was worried about getting the bigger things.

Kiddies Kingdom is a great site. I really like the out N About Nipper - you can get it with a carrycot. I've pushed quite a few pushchairs and this is just so easy. Newborns can only be in the car seat for 20 minutes so to me attaching a car seat to puschair is pointless. However I find it a lot easier getting newborn in car seat in the house and carrying it outside to the car so I would still recommend getting an infant car seat before getting one that rear faces to 25kg. Just make sure it has a 5 point harness.

Whatever you are looking at there will always be videos of it on YouTube for you to check out.

With car seats you want to go for the safest which often doesn’t come with a travel system. First baby I never used the car seat in the pram frame with second child I do frequently as she hates the buggy and I just push her and all the stuff from the car to where I’m going and then when we get into the warmth I pop her into the sling.

For pushchairs think about where you will use them and if you want more children when and what will your life look like eg visiting nt places. Do you want a carrycot that can be used as a Moses basket and is suitable for overnight sleeping? Do you want parent or world facing?
