My baby might have down syndrome

Hi, hope everyone's safe and well,
So I just really want a bit of advice really. Im 13 weeks (14weeks tomorrow) pregnant and Im only 22 yrs old, I had a phone call from the midwife today telling me I had a 1 in 45 chance of my baby having down syndrome, so the risk is quite high. we discussed my options and I choose to carry on with pregnancy as normal. So i won't know for certain if my baby has down syndrome until I give birth but I just wondered why my risk is so high, I know they can tell me more, but has anyone else been in the same position.
Thanks for reading guys,

I suffered with high hcg and low pappa that increased my odds. These had other potential impacts.

Do they offer harmony or Nipt tests? They're non invasive.

@Loz123456 I’m a midwife specialising in screening and fetal medicine. Happy to discuss by PM if you want to

I am so pleased sussexmidwife is here. I'm sure she will help you.

I have a relative who had down syndrome. We all live him very much.

I had a 1:25 chance of down hat a high nt of 4.2 I decided on the amnio results came back all clear so just because you have high results it could still be wrong x

Loz123456 · 03/04/2020 10:57

I have been offered the amnio but I decided against it I didn't want to put my self at risk of miscarriage. I had a miscarriage week before Christmas last year and then fell pregnant again with this baby without having a period in between, so I don't know if that has something to with why I came back high risk x

You can pay privately for non invasive blood tests that are more accurate (Harmony tests). They are around £400, if you can afford it you could look into that. Sending positive thoughts.

Can you not access the nuchal fold scan. I was high odds fir this due to age & it was ruled out thanks to this scan.

Our good friends DS teen son is an amazing human being though, he's brought joy to everyone he meets since he was tiny & he is passing exams & doing amazingly well training fir his chosen career. She has lots of children & though loves them all, has said par hospital for various related surgery's such as for hearing etc, he's been by far her easiest child to bring up. We all love him dearly & he really is an absolute joy & actually very clever in certain ways

Hi Loz123456 I'm in the same position as you, I was given a 1:6 chance of my baby having Down's syndrome. I too refused invasive testing, however I paid privately for a NIPT test (Harmony), unfortunately for me the test didn't work as there was insufficient foetal dna in my blood. So now, I'm waiting until
Birth for the outcome. So far my baby is healthy and according to scans is growing well and has no heart conditions. I'm 27 weeks.

IceKitten · 03/04/2020 14:37

No OP, your miscarriage should not have anything to do with the test result. It will be a combination of your blood test and the nuchal fold measurement (and your age - but that's low risk in your case).

BrooHaHa · 03/04/2020 14:39

1 in 45 is still only 2%, OP. So I know they say high-risk, but really, there's still a 98% of the baby not having Downs Syndrome. Fingers crossed for a healthy baby for you and @Blizy.

StrawberryJam200 · 03/04/2020 14:42

1 remember a 1 in 45 chance means for everyone (the theoretical group of 45) in your position 44 of them will not have babies with Down’s.

2 my brother has Down’s and he’s a wonderful human being whom I love very much.

mrspepperpotty · 03/04/2020 15:07

This is a really tricky thing OP and it's up to you to decide. If you do want to find out for sure, remember that the risk of a miscarriage from an amnio is quite a bit lower than 1 in 45. Personally I'd want to know, but it is completely your choice.
