Doppler 12 weeks

I have my 12 week
Scan on Monday but I booked a private one which we had 2 weeks ago. All was good and we heard the heartbeat. I have a fetal doppler that I used for my son and daughter I've been checking it every few days and tonight I and my partner heard what we thought was 2 heartbeats?! Is this possible? They weren't next to each other and sounded different one was a little slower than the other.

The slower one is your heartbeat

TTC1993 · 02/04/2020 21:41

Congrats first of all💕

Ditch the doppler there very scary things if you aren't trained to use them 🤯

& very likely you are hearing your babies heart beat and the slower one is your own or possibly the sound of the womb membrane which carries a huge blood supply.

Don't rely on the doppler... any problems phone your midwife. Loads of people rely on them and think they hear the babies heart beat and its too late before they realise sadly! Xx

I thought medical professionals advised against using dopplers at home.

But you really shouldn't be using a Doppler at home as they aren't recommended by the NHS as it can lead to unnecessary worrying or false sense of security. Bottom line is if you are worried speak to your early pregnancy unit

It will be your heartbeat doubling up with the baby's :)

KimH88 · 03/04/2020 12:17

Like I said I used it with both my other children and never had an issues with finding the heartbeat but never heart 2. I know plenty of people that use them. If it is twins anyway I would find out on Monday at my scan lol.

This is the reason they are not advised - to avoid confusion and false sense of security. It could be the placenta sounds you'd are hearing as the "second" heartbeat. Who knows. Don't use it and wait for the scan.

Didn’t you read the link I included? You shouldn’t be using it, you’re not medically trained.

Bezalelle · 03/04/2020 13:22

Why are you subjecting your baby to all these non-essential soundwaves?

EarlGreyT · 03/04/2020 13:41

I've been checking it every few days and tonight I and my partner heard what we thought was 2 heartbeats?!

This is exactly why you shouldn’t use a Doppler.

You didn’t hear 2 fetal heartbeats-if it was twins they’d have picked that up on the scan you had 2 weeks ago. They didn’t so there is clearly only one fetal heart there.

Dopplers unless you’re trained to use them can provide false reassurance.

Given that you can’t tell which of the 2 “heartbeats” you picked up is the fetal one you definitely shouldn’t be using a home Doppler.

It’s also entirely possible that neither of the “heartbeats” you heard are the fetal heart as one could be yours and one the placenta. Trained midwives don’t even use a Doppler at 12 weeks because it’s very difficult to detect the fetal heart on a Doppler this early.

Just because you know plenty of people who use them, it doesn’t make it a good idea. Professionals advise against using home dopplers for good reason.
