Hi guys

With all the weirdness going on re antenatal appointments I wondered when do they do the blood test for rhesus and when should
You be told if you need an anti d injection?

Thanks

I had blood drawn at my booking in appointment and was told the results later, perhaps my 16 week appointment. I already knew I was rhesus negative as I give blood. Anti D injection about 30 weeks, this was 2016, guidance may have changed.

Pwd1 · 03/04/2020 18:13

They test when they draw blood at the booking appointment. I was told at 16 weeks that I'd need it and I'm booked for the injection at 28 weeks

lockdownpregnancy · 03/04/2020 18:19

I already know I'm B+ so they told me straight away in my first midwife appointment at 8 weeks that I didn't need one.
If you know you're blood type you will know if you need it or not x

heroineinahalfshell · 03/04/2020 19:00

Yep, same as @Pwd1 for me. I knew I was A- so also told them at the booking in.

Pwd1 · 03/04/2020 19:16

@heroineinahalfshell I'm A- as well, I didn't know beforehand though

I had bloods taken at my booking appt. My MW then took more bloods including blood group again at about 27w. She had already booked in my anti d when I saw her at 24w. I had this on Thursday when I was 28w + 6d.
I was surprised! It’s not too bad. Whooping cough was worse.

mrs87 · 04/04/2020 07:15

Same as Pwd1, told by midwife at 16 weeks after bloods at 12 week scan I'm assuming. Booked in for 28 weeks.

ArtichokeAardvark · 04/04/2020 07:18

Bloods are taken at booking appointment and injection is given around 28 weeks if needed. I had no idea of my blood group but found out I'm O- which makes me a universal donor. Blood banks luuuurve people like me...

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/04/2020 07:33

This might be a helpful place to ask. I know I’m A- because of blood taken during a miscarriage at 5+3 last year, that was my first pregnancy. Now pregnant again (7+3) so will need anti-D, but does anyone know if a miscarriage that early will have lead to rhesus sensitisation?

heroineinahalfshell · 04/04/2020 13:47

@BuffaloCauliflower I don't know of the chances, but I had an mc at 5w years ago, and wasn't already sensitised this time around.

@Pwd1 A neg is pretty rare (8% of population), so blood banks love us!

Essexgirlupnorth · 04/04/2020 13:50

I was told if the miscarriage was before 5 weeks you don't need to have anti-d.

Essexgirlupnorth · 04/04/2020 13:51

Sorry that should have been 12 weeks had medical management for two missed miscarriages both should have been more than 12 weeks by dates and had anti-d after both

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/04/2020 15:40

@Essexgirlupnorth it was a bit after 5 weeks but I wasn’t offered it

ChampooPapi · 04/04/2020 17:27

Alot of booking in appointments have been cancelled and many many pregnant women are not seeing anyone no in person until their 12 week scan. So perhaps this is what the op is asking. If everyone's saying 'at my booking in appointment' well those don't exist for a lot of women now as they are on the phone so I'm guessing they actually test you at 12 weeks

Scruffyoak · 04/04/2020 17:28

I had a blood test early but the anti D is at 28 weeks and 34 weeks

opticaldelusion · 04/04/2020 19:43

Blood banks love all donors FFS.

heroineinahalfshell · 04/04/2020 20:07

@opticaldelusion you're a ray of sunshine.

happytoday73 · 04/04/2020 20:21

@Buffalocauliflower do you happen to know if the dad +or-? As if first pregnancy both parents neg then obv no potential issue.
And even if dad positive miscarriage could have been RH- anyway (as positive phenotype can be ++ genotype or + -... So if former baby will be + but latter 50%chance neg baby if neg other parent) and therefore no issue.

Anaesthetist83 · 04/04/2020 20:48

In Nottingham, I had a blood test at 16 weeks as I am Oneg to test babies blood group. If this is negative, I won’t need anti D, if it is, I will (28 weeks and delivery). This is relatively new and not done in all areas.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/04/2020 21:05

@happytoday73 DH doesn’t know his blood type unfortunately, he’s even checked with his mum! I’d send him to give blood and find out but he’s Type 1 diabetic and he’s not allowed. You’d think with the amount of blood tests he’s had in his life someone might have found out his type
