Baby sleeping options

Hi ladies I was just wondering what you think would be the best thing to purchase for my baby to sleep in both during the day and in our room at night. A Moses basket, one of those cots that attach to your bed(is it called a me to you cot or have I made that up 😂), a travel system that comes with a pram option then what for upstairs. Any help and advice gratefully received.

I had a moses basket for upstairs/ our bedroom but downstairs I had a 'baby box' for him to sleep in downstairs which was amazing and lasted for a few months. It had a little matress in and 1 sheet (but a pillow case fits it as well). It was free but you have to pay P&P and now I use it for storage. Apparently babies shouldn't be left in pram (according to my midwife, couple of baby books I read, etc). This was the link I used - inews.co.uk/news/consumer/lidl-baby-box-free-uk-how-to-get-one-153545

Either will do. Although in my case was a total waste of money as ds coslept from day 2 and still does most nights now over 4 years later.

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 01/04/2020 23:09

I had a moses basket for upstairs and then the cot attachment for the travel system downstairs... The moses basket got slept in a grand total of 4 times he wouldn't settle in it so the travel(?) cot got carried up and downstairs every evening and morning for the first 4 months, and then I started taking him up to his cot to nap in for him to get used to the space ready for the transition.

I didn't know anything about not leaving them in a pram? The health visitor only commented that we could bulk it out a bit more so the space around him was tighter to recreate a womb like space. Ds is almost 9months, is that recent advice @redwinefine?

MrsRose2018 · 01/04/2020 23:17

We are getting a snuzpod for upstairs - attaches to the bed like you said - and a Moses basket for downstairs. Also got an actual 0-4yr cot in the nursery.

Going to try resist co-sleeping and and like a PP said take him up for naps when he nears 6 months to get him used to transitioning to his new space x

mumma2b2020 · 01/04/2020 23:39

@bellsx we've got a chicco next to me for upstairs and a chicco baby hug 4 in 1 for downstairs that we put the sleepyhead in - DD falls asleep in both x

Dollywilde · 01/04/2020 23:45

I think it depends on the pram, it’s about ventilation. We’ve got an iCandy lime which has a carrycot approved for overnight sleeping so we’ll be using this for naps and when we’re away from home, with a Chico bedside cot for night time. DC not here yet though so can’t vouch for how this works! But my understanding is that babies can be fussy little things so it’s luck of the draw whether they’re happy with the sleeping arrangements you lovingly set up for them Grin

SallyLovesCheese · 01/04/2020 23:48

I had a baby box for downstairs sleeping - very handy and easily transportable. Upstairs we had a next-to-me which lasted DS until he was six months and it was so useful to have him right there, didn't need to get out of bed to feed. At six months he went into the nursery with a cot bed that should last until he's about 4.

CoolNoMore · 02/04/2020 03:29

Following. Interested to hear about not leaving them in the pram - I did this a lot with my first and #2 was going to get the same treatment...

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/04/2020 06:25

We’ve got a next to me for upstairs. Downstairs using the carry cot from the pram. I think it depends what pram you have. We have an oyster 3 which has a firm mattress and good ventilation and is approved for overnight sleeping

KHall84 · 02/04/2020 07:01

I have a swinging crib down stairs as bigger than moses basket so lasts longer and I have a next to me for our room and he has his own big cot in nursery for when he is old enough to go in there, my pram also has a approved overnight carry cot and I also have the stand for that which I will use when we travel xx

T0rt0ise · 02/04/2020 07:33

Another one that has a baby box downstairs and then we use the carry cot from the pram upstairs in our bedroom. We then have a copy ready to go in another room when he grows out of the carry cot.

Dyra · 02/04/2020 07:41

The plan was Moses basket for upstairs, pram (overnight sleep rated) for downstairs.

The reality was naps on me during the day and fortunately she'd (eventually) sleep in her basket.

LoveIsLovely · 02/04/2020 07:42

I would read up on safe sleep as I am seeing a lot of comments here that go against the latest research.

Look at the healthychildren.org website, they have all the information from the American Association of Paediatrics. The NHS has a lot of unsafe sleep advice, so please don't follow what they say.

The rate of SIDS increases by 400% when you bed share. Despite what people seem to want you to believe, it is not necessary to bed share to get any sleep. I have never bed shared, my baby is now four months. Yes there were tough times but you get through it for safety's sake.

MichelleOR84 · 02/04/2020 07:48

I used a snuz pod for my little one ( it attached to the bed ) and a sleepy head for naps around the house during the day . I love my snuz pod and will use it for baby number 2 however I found it a bit big for a new born . I struggled to get my little one to sleep in it until he was about 8 weeks old . He basically slept in my arms 😩. I even tried the sleepy head In it and that did work but only for half the night . Plus it’s not really recommended to do that ( neither is letting a baby sleep in your arms but it happened 😔). I’m pregnant with baby number two and will buy a smaller Moses basket for the newborn stage .

ClassicallyConditioned · 02/04/2020 08:15

We strapped a full size cot to the side of our bed (with the side off) and he slept in that during nights from day1. This meant that a) we didn't waste £££ on a separate crib and b) he got used to that cot and the translation to his own room was v easy with no sleep disruption.

He's an amazing sleeper & slept through the night since 8 weeks (although this could just be genetics).

In the day he just napped on the sofa until he could roll and then we put him in his cot for naps (easy because we were in a flat so he was never far away, but if you're in a house you may need a proper sleeping area downstairs for naps)

Temple29 · 02/04/2020 09:40

DS slept in the pram carrycot downstairs during the day or on one of us because we couldn’t help but hold him! At night he slept in a babylo crib but definitely preferred the cot when we moved him to that around 3 months.

SagaBauer · 02/04/2020 10:16

It's not as simple as saying bedsharing increases SIDS by 400%, planned or unplanned? Breast or bottle fed? Prem or term babies? www.basisonline.org.uk/ is a good resource. Every parent has to make an informed decision. And some babies do just want to be held to sleep, so therefore it's better to prepare and bed share safely than accidentally fall asleep with baby.

I had a Next to Me upstairs and Moses basket for downstairs. Moses basket was barely used, baby slept on me for day naps Smile.

Shmithecat2 · 02/04/2020 10:44

@LoveIsLovely
Despite what people seem to want you to believe, it is not necessary to bed share to get any sleep.

It was for me.

Its amusing that 4 months in, you think you know it all - thanks for giving me my first laugh of the day.

Fivebyfive2 · 02/04/2020 10:59

We had a moses basket for downstairs and a snuzpod for our room upstairs. He was too small for the snuz at first, so he was in the basket night and day until about 2 months old, then he would settle in the snuz, attached to our bed. We have a cot bed for him to go into in his own room once he's 6 months... Hopefully!! Xx

MrsRose2018 · 02/04/2020 11:20

Can I slightly hijack this thread and ask for opinions on NexttoMe vs Snuzpod?

We haven’t bought ours yet but I’m getting the sense the snuzpod is bigger? Is this not good? Do babies not like that? This is my first...

Rotorua · 02/04/2020 12:13

We have a next2me for upstairs and moses basket for downstairs. DD didn't sleep well in next2me till she was 1 month old so we coslept, but now (5 months old) she is still sleeping in both although she is growing out of moses basket soon. I know a lot of mums say moses basket is a waste of money, but for us it worked so well. She loves being rocked in it and it was the only place she liked sleeping in for the first few weeks (apart on me ofc :D)

myfirsttimehere · 02/04/2020 12:43

@MrsRose2018

I want to know this too! It's very confusing.. I thought the Next2Me was bigger because I've heard it lasts longer?!

@MrsRose2018 Next2Me is definitely bigger.
We got a snuzpod because we only have a small space beside bed. Next2Me was too big.

BelfastNonBlonde · 02/04/2020 23:04

We got a snuzpod for next to bed for night time. I also have a babybox for downstairs (even though husband says no way baby will be sleeping in a cardboard box - lol it will..)

Good thing about snuzpod is hat the bassinet bit lifts off the base so can also be brought downstairs during day if we wish.

Will just wait and see what baby likes! Due in May.
