bellybutton ring - stay or go?

Hello all,

This is probably a really stupid question - should i have my belly button ring removed now that I'm up the duff? I don't really want to as it was quite painful getting it done ("Ha! think that's painful, try childbirth! - my mums words)Any advice appreciated!

You do not need to remove it unless you find it uncomfortable. I have seen many women in labour with rings still in. Some have changed them to plastic bars. Depends what you want to do really.

Hi,
I know lots of mums who have been safe leaving them in, but I left mine in and it split badly and scarred. I ended up having it redone to hide the scar, but I'm now preggers again, and removed it as soon as my belly button stated to flatten out. I really wouldn't risk it. I'll jsut be going along again after these babies are born!

lose it now...

it will be such a long time before your tummy is back to displaying a tummy button ring (if ever! ), you're best off not being reminded constantly of your former washboard-stomach status!

Hey Raggybaggy - good name!! hahaha!

I think its down to individual choice.

If you WANT to keep it in get a plastic maternity bar which cost approx £5.

Dependant upon how long you have had your piercing you could take it out when you well up to the size of a mini-truck and put in back in after.

Or you could take it out and re-pierce after when you have lost your weight and your tummy is more to your liking.

Who knows what turn your belly will take and what you will feel or look like after but those there are probably your choices!

I am 24 weeks and still got mine in...i had a bar made from where i had it done..took it out for my scan but put straight back in....you only have to take out for c section unless it starts to feel unconfortable

dawnie1 · 06/01/2005 15:44

I wore my bellybutton ring the whole way through my pregnancy and only had to take it out for about 2 hours when I had my emergency c-section. I put on over 4 stone so my stomach was huge but it didn't affect my bellybutton at all. HTH

Erinleigh · 09/02/2005 01:16

I kept my bar in until I was about 30 weeks pregnant with twins... I had to take it out as the skin was so thin I thought it was going to split! (Gross, I know!)

I don't have a discernible belly button now... just a funny lump and wrinkle above it where the piercing used to be.

Sorry, I know this sounds disgusting, but it was my first pregnancy, and twins at that, and I am normally about 8 stone. So everything stretched way too much... a normal pregnancy would probably be just fine.

jabberwocky · 09/02/2005 01:58

I'm with dawnie1 - wore it up until I was being swabbed for emergency c-section. I have to admit that I waited a few weeks after to put it back because I hated to look at my flabby tummy but almost waited too long. It had started to grow back together already. The tech was able to just push through luckily, but she said if Ihad waited longer it would have had to completely grow up and be repierced!

jabberwocky · 09/02/2005 02:00

Oh, good grief didn't realize I had already posted on this.

Hi Raggybaggy -

I am 24 weeks preggers and I too was in a quandry with regards my Belly Button piercing as I love mine and fear it would grow over.
Try www.pregnancyretainers.com they have some fantastic belly button bars for pregnant women in various sizes that are completely safe and reasonable in price too.
Hope this helps

I tried the plastic pregnancy bars around 4-5 months but the whole area was too irritated (I had had it done 12 years previously as well!).

I was forced to remove it and it partially healed over, but I 'reopened it' a few months after dd was born using savlon and a sterilised darning needle (this is apparently the best thing to do?!?!?). There was no blood at all, and I put the bar back in with no problems.

Go! They're horrible! IMO

cornflakegirl · 09/02/2005 16:02

thanks for the reminder - been meaning to work out what to do about my belly bar for a while

i just ordered a maternity belly bar from bellybar.co.uk for £4 incl p+p, if anyone is interested.

(would also like to say i've never had a belly that i wanted to show off! piercing is just for me )
