Cancelling gestational diabetes test

I am due a GTT later this month. Obviously if by some miracle our lives are back to normal by then, I will happily attend the test.
But if it's not, I do not want to sit in hospital for two hours with everything that's going on. My midwife appointment in two weeks time has been cancelled so I can't talk to her about it.

I was offered it because I am over 35. I don't have a BMI over 30 and I have no other risk factors. I just feel it is not worth the risk but at the same time I would like all tests offered obviously to ensure the health of baby.

Would you go to it in the current circumstances?

I was allowed to sit in my car for the 2 hour wait.

MrsJaneyp · 31/03/2020 19:48

I was at my antenatal unit last week and they have changed it all round to comply with the social distancing 2m rules etc

My GTT is at the end of the month and having seen the antenatal clinic last week I have no worries about going in for the test.

Partners are not allowed to be with you so just take a good book and keep your distance from everyone.

Adviceplease1234 · 31/03/2020 19:53

You need to have the test. I had no risk factors either but had gestational diabetes and the risks to the baby if it goes undetected are very serious.

Can you ask to have the blood tests at your local gp practice instead? That's normal for my area anyway.

CeibaTree · 31/03/2020 19:58

I didn't have to do any waiting around. They gave me a bottle of lucozade to drink on an empty stomach first thing in the morning then I had to go and give blood within a certain amount of time. I wasn't expecting to be diagnosed with GD either but I was and managed to control it through diet. Best to find out either way though.

MrsRose2018 · 31/03/2020 19:59

I have mine in 2 weeks as well and it’s indicated because of my BMI being high!

The way I see it, the absolute worst case scenario and I get corona virus according to the latest RCOG guidance pregnant women aren’t affected by this virus any worse than others except for there being a few isolated cases of pre term labour in China - and they still don’t know whether that was because the mothers were advised to deliver early!

GD if untreated can cause pre eclampsia, pre term birth and even still birth, let alone you likely needing a C section and possibly an early delivery date!

For me it’s a risk v benefits thing and I appreciate every woman is different but risks aside I want to know if i have GD!

Like a previous poster has said the units are taking more precautions would, aside from bored shitless, I think it’s fine to go xx

I also sat in my car for the 2 hour wait...they told me not to and to sit somewhere in the hospital in case I had any rare side effects like ringing in the ears but I chose to ignore them and sat in the car, with my phone ready to ring a family member if I started to not feel well...I would still have it done though just incase!

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 31/03/2020 20:09

If they let me sit in the car like a PP said then I will feel much better about it. I have an autoimmune disease so my anxiety is high right now.

Can't have it done at GP as they have closed, hence the cancelled midwife appointment.

I'll ring beforehand and ask of I'll be allowed to sit in the car

I was allowed to wander off and go look round the shops for the wait. It's a PITA I know I had several but I'd still go.

MrsRose2018 · 31/03/2020 20:43

Also OP, I’ve a little boy due in July as well :) congrats 💕 xx

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 31/03/2020 21:01

@MrsRose2018 ...Aww congrats to you too! And thank you for your previous post, I'm definitely going to go to the appointment. Going to ask if I can sit in the car and wait Smile

I had gestational diabetes tests in my current and last pregnancies. Both came back negative, as I was 99% sure they would. My family just seem to have big babies.

I would and did still go though. It isn't the most fun in the world, not the worst thing either, but you really do need to know.

mouse1234567 · 31/03/2020 21:07

I have mine on Thursday and I am not thrilled about waiting in hospital-but they don’t allow anyone in showing symptoms, they are very clean places and will be less busy. I’m actually considering wearing a mask-would you perhaps? I think the risks of undiagnosed diabetes are very bad so it’s worth it.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 31/03/2020 21:08

@Delbelleber In my hospital would not be possible as they take bloods after an hour and then again after 2 hours, and tell you not to walk or even talk too much in between tests as it renders them unreliable, so everyone just sits there for 2 hours without moving.

ser91 · 31/03/2020 21:12

I went to a growth scan at 38 weeks yesterday. Honestly there was barely anyone around and everyone was cleaning ALL of the time.

You'll be on the look out for things too, so you can be cautious.

They are suggesting that you shouldn't cancel any antenatal tests, as they're really Important. X

SnoozyLou · 31/03/2020 21:18

@ser91 I'll second that. I had a scan today and the waiting room was empty. I've never, ever seen that before. I did find it a bit disconcerting, but what worried me most is that people are cancelling scans they actually need.

PAJJ · 31/03/2020 21:20

I had mine cancelled - I was called about it and the decision was that my only risk factor was being over 35 was outweighed by the trip to the hospital in the current situation. I wonder if that's also due to being in Lambeth which has so many COVID cases? They said that they would check my urine etc at the next midwife appointment and if anything changes I'll have the test. Although, now I'm wondering if that will go ahead?!
