Changing the baby - do I have everything I need?

I have bought the following:

  • Nappies (size 1 and 2)
  • Two changing mats (one for home and one portable mat for when we're out)
  • Water wipes
  • Cotton wool balls
  • A tube of Weleda Calendula nappy cream.

Is there anything else you need or is that all? Confused

I would get a tube of yellow metanium. It's the best thing for clearing up nappy rash so good to have a tube ready

norbert23 · 31/03/2020 13:04

Yes definitely yellow metanium!

Zara1234uk · 31/03/2020 13:09

Another vote for yellow metanium it’s fantastic stuff

SlimGin · 31/03/2020 13:12

Nappy bags!

Nonnymum · 31/03/2020 13:13

You might want a few size 0 nappies. You may find size 1 too big in the first week or so. And sudocrem is very good.

JC12345 · 31/03/2020 13:15

Have you thought about reusable wipes? We use cheeky wipes and they're great. Have white ones for bums and coloured for faces. They clean so much better than disposables.

RhymingRabbit3 · 31/03/2020 13:17

Another vote for reusable wipes, much cheaper in the long run

SockQueen · 31/03/2020 13:19

Nappy sacks + a bin to throw them in.

DryHeave · 31/03/2020 13:19

Clothes. You will need lots of changes of clothes in your changing bag. Possibly even for yourself. Seriously.

Liverbird77 · 31/03/2020 13:22

Also, I have two changing mats at home, along with nappies, bags and wipes by each.
It is so helpful not to have to go upstairs, especially in the early months when changes are frequent and you might still be healing.

ohwerehalfwaythere · 31/03/2020 13:23

Reusable wipes are much better than wet wipes, plus they stop your baby getting nappy rash. Cheeky Wipes are great

wondering7777 · 31/03/2020 13:26

Yes definitely yellow metanium!

And sudocrem is very good.

Thanks! Do these two products do the same job as the Weleda Calendula cream, or will I need them in addition?

I didn’t even think about nappy bags/sacks - thanks. Can I just throw these in our kitchen bin? Confused

Cloth nappies used on top of the change mat so you can throw them in the wash when you get the poo everywhere inevitably (rather than having to wash the change mat cover repeatedly). Puppy training pads (cheaper than disposable change mats) are also useful and you can reuse them if they just get a bit of wee on them.

What will you be changing nappies on? I found on the floor or appropriate height change table (either a proper change table or chest of drawers with change mat on top) to be the best, it killed my back doing it on beds.

Also if you're in a two story house, have a change station for both levels (doesn't need all the bells and whistles, just nappies/ wipes/ mat or towel) to make life easier.

norbert23 · 31/03/2020 13:29

I had the weleda cream as a general barrier cream but nothing works as well as yellow metanium for nappy rash - you won't have to use it every change just if you think they look sore.

KHall84 · 31/03/2020 13:30

@wondering7777 weleda is the same I woukdnt bother getting either of the other 2 creams I only use weleda and never had an issue with nappy rash it's a great cream xx

CockblockingCowboy · 31/03/2020 13:31

I only used nappy bags when out and about (transporting wet/ pooey clothes home from an outing or a pooey nappy until I got to a rubbish bin), and never bothered at home (the poo doesn't really smell too bad until they get onto solids in my opinion). I also didn't use a fancy nappy bin, they just tend to mask the odour at best anyway

wondering7777 · 31/03/2020 13:33

Thanks! I just have a basic mat that I'll use on the floor.

I had the weleda cream as a general barrier cream but nothing works as well as yellow metanium for nappy rash

Do you need to apply barrier cream every time you change? I thought the Weleda was just if the baby gets nappy rash. Sorry for all the questions - I'm so clueless Confused

As well as what others have suggested, a basket to create a portable changing station.

CrotchetyQuaver · 31/03/2020 13:38

Poo bags, and when you're away from home always a change of clothes for baby and maybe a spare top for you. When you've experienced your first poonami you will thank us

Settlersofcatan · 31/03/2020 13:39

Babies are all different re nappy rash, some get it really easily and need barrier cream every time and others are almost immune to it. The yellow metanium is superb when the baby has nappy rash but not all babies will

Yesterdayforgotten · 31/03/2020 13:40

I just used sudacrem as a barrier cream and found it worked great, both my dc have never had nappy rash but maybe I've just been lucky.

Yesterdayforgotten · 31/03/2020 13:41

As pp said maybe yours wont get it so I would wait and see. One jar of sudacrem has lasted me years.

Yesterdayforgotten · 31/03/2020 13:44

I would consider a portable organiser or box that you can keep nappies, wipes, cotton wool, linens, spare bodysuit, nappy bags, any medicine etc. This was a godsend for both of my dc.

MsChatterbox · 31/03/2020 14:02

No you don't need to apply cream every change. For my son I use sudocream if he's a little bit red and I've only used metanium once when he actually looked sore but it was completely gone the next nappy change so it's very good to have on hand! When you apply cream, make sure you don't apply too much as it can affect the absorbancy of the nappy. And applying cream every change can sometimes build a resistance and make it ineffective. Sudocream last ages though. I've got a big tub that's been going 2 years and I apply it for anything on his skin that I have no idea what to do with 😊

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 31/03/2020 14:07

Another vote for Cheeky Wipes.
