Do I need any medicines for newborn?

Are there any medicines that I should have in stock for a newborn baby? I'm guessing they'll be impossible to get now sadly, but it would be good to know if there's anything essential I should have so I can at least try...

Just vitamin d drops. Too little for paracetamol

PotteringAlong · 31/03/2020 12:25

No, they’re too little for medicine unless it’s prescribed.

Saline nasal drops, maybe?

AnotherMurkyDay · 31/03/2020 12:27

They recommend calpol with some of the jabs. I think the youngest is 2 or 3 months plus, though.

Infacol

wondering7777 · 31/03/2020 12:49

Thanks! I looked at Calpol and I think it's for babies aged two months and over.

Thanks for the Infacol suggestion. I've just been able to order a bottle on Amazon - it's a miracle! It says it's suitable from birth.

Just saline drops in case they get a blocked nose.

georgialondon · 31/03/2020 12:52

You just need calpol for the 8 week immunisations.

Thanks - I've just ordered these as well. They're also available on Amazon - what's going on?!

Not medicine but related - get a thermometer if you can (also a bit tricky to get hold of right now).

wondering7777 · 31/03/2020 13:04

Thanks @MargoGru. I did manage to get a basic one for babies online - it was all I could find. Hopefully it'll be enough!

You could also get one of the nasal suction devices to go with your saline nasal drops.

I second the vitamin d - essential if you are breastfeeding and it is also a good anti viral.

Snuffle babes for colds and infacol just in case

LoisLittsLover · 31/03/2020 13:10

Colief helped us with dd's terrible wind and Belly pain, infacol did nothing for her.

Spam88 · 31/03/2020 13:18

Colief is for lactose intolerance though so a completely different product.

Isn't snuffle babe a menthol type product? So not suitable for newborns.

Sulkypatsy · 31/03/2020 13:28

I think snufdlebabe rub is only for 2/3 months up. Camphor products should be used with caution in infants

Thanks! I have a nasal device already, but will buy some vitamin d.

Calpol is fine for newborns. But should be prescribed as the dose is different, also if you need to use it then a tiny baby needs to be seen by a doctor. We use saline drops all the time for our cleft lip and palate babies. The sterimar spray is better than drops. (Peads nurse)
