Toys for newborn?

I've just realised that I've bought most of the practical things for my new baby but haven't thought about toys. Do you need any toys for a newborn or are they too little? I've got a teddy bear but that's about it!

This thread is a little old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for the top baby toys, we’ve recently updated our best baby toys page with lots of great options for your baby's first year, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

They dont need toys. And you will be given some, toys and cute outfits are popular gifts.

When are you due?

No, they don't need toys at first.

A playmat and gym is good fairly early on.

Maybe a mobile or something for the pram.

A comfort toy, one of those muslins with a head.

But none of it is needed straight away.

@wondering7777

No they dont need toys until they're at least 3 months old in my opinion.

The only useful things for a newborn are things they can just 'look' at, e.g. a cot mobile, play gym with dangly toys. A tummy time cushion might also be useful.

But dont worry about 'doing' things with them for a few months, all they need at the beginning is cuddles really.

I asked this also. Have now actually got a small selection as have been given a few bits such as a toys soft head thing on small blanket, and odd teddy.
Signed up to hipp online and they sent a free welcome package in post with 1 nappy, cream sample and small soft rattle.
Bought a teether type toy but assume they don't need it straight away.

MIL also dug out Dhs 30+ year old teddies from the loft, they have been washed and are actually quite sweet (yet dog eared)

As a PP said only get stuff for them to look at, they won’t really play with any toys for the first few months.

A playmat/playgym is nice for them to lie on and look up at something, and good for tummy time. DD also liked to look at really simple black and white images when she was very little so maybe a book like this one: Black and White www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0061172111/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gwFGEbP0RT7EG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I second the black & white books.. my little 12 day old is slightly hypnotised by a black & white muslin (from Etta Loves) and black & white book we have! It’s handy to pop on the floor for her to look at during a nappy change or over the side of her Snuz while I jump in the shower (we have an en-suite, I can see her at all times).

Another slightly hypnotic toy is the Baby Einstein Aquarium .. another useful nappy change toy or just for a kick around on the floor! My 2 year old also loves it so good gift!

From about 6/7 weeks, we put DD on a tummy time roll toy and she much preferred it to just being face down on the floor. I ended up buying it for several others. I’ll see if I can find it but DD is 6 now. Grin

I really rate that black and white book that @YakkityYakYakYak posted - it folds out so it can stand up and you can put it beside them on the floor/changing mat. My son loved it and we’ve bought it as gifts for loads of other new babies.
