Isolating for 12 weeks-nursery essentials

So I have to socially distance as I am pregnant and have underlying health conditions , I need to stay off work for 12 weeks, when I go back to work I’ll be 32 weeks pregnant and will only be back for 6 weeks then going on mat leave (all being well!), so whilst I’m off I’m thinking shall I get started on finishing touches for our little girls nursery ?
It’s painted , got some art in there and got the Moses basket and general bedroom furniture . What else do I need? We are getting the cot bed next Friday after my 20 week scan, but I’m thinking I may as well get prepared whilst I’m off and well? What do babies need?!
This is our first if it’s not obvious 🤣💕

I don't think they need anything else nursery wise. We have a cot put in our bedroom, and some chest of drawers in spare bedroom with changing mat on top. Oh and a small basket for laundry in there.

The spare bedroom will eventually become babies bedroom but they will share ours the first 6-12 months.

Once baby is using bedroom things we might need to get which you might need:
Comfy rug to play on
Bookshelves
lamp?

But if your not 20 weeks yet, you might want to leave odd accessories for actually buying in the shops in 3-4 months time as i am sure you will want to get outside by then

Laura1348 · 30/03/2020 14:48

Hello,
I am in the same position. i will be 32 weeks when i return. I have nothing- well a changing bag and one outfit. I wanted to know what i would need too.

I0NA · 30/03/2020 14:52

Babies need

Nappies
Baby grows
A car seat if you use a car
A sling or buggy
Bottles and formula if you are not breast feeding
Washable surface for changing nappies, like a mat
Somewhere to sleep - you have a Moses basket so thats fine

That’s it in terms of essentials. 90% of what people tell you that you “need” is just luxury, so by all means buy it if you have the money and space .

Don’t buy clothes and toys as you get given loads.

ClassicallyConditioned · 30/03/2020 14:53

Your baby will be in your room for the first 6-12 months so you'll have plenty of time to shop for finishing touches in that period.

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/03/2020 17:01

Thank you, really helpful :) not gonna lie I forgot the baby won’t be in there for a long time 😂😂 too focussed on decorating lol
Thank you, now, what do I do for 12 weeks ? 😩😆

You take it easy and enjoy your pregnancy. I am 13w6d and i have to social distance. Take care.

Thank you, now, what do I do for 12 weeks ? 😩😆

Normally I’d say go out and do all the things you can’t do with a baby . But that’s kind of hard now.

So I’d say - stay at home and have long peaceful baths, watch box sets, have long intelligent conversations and lots of sex. Not necessarily all at once.

I'm 21 weeks and planning to use the time I'm at home (fortunately able to work from home) to start buying things and sorting things around the house. Will probably decorate the room in about 6-8 weeks when I'm a bit closer but started buying the odd bit if my list as nothing quite a bit keeps going out of stock.

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 31/03/2020 17:37

I’m 26 weeks and starting maternity leave in three weeks which is earlier than I would have chosen but keen to get out of work cos of the virus ( I’m a nurse) we have decorated the babies room and I’m having a massive sort out of general clutter. I’m planning on getting completely organised life wise, paperwork, underwear drawer, the lot! Then for the last month I plan on resting, reading, baths, writing poems and buying nice little fun things for the baby. One thing my mum keeps telling me to get is a baby changing table. There are lots second hand although could be risky with the virus.
My babies room is going to have a chest of drawers, changing table, sofa bed. A place for all the bottle making stuff cos I’m planning on doing bottle and breast. The crib will be in our room which leaves space in their room for baby gym, bouncer and pram to be stored x

Do any of you ladies get anxiety before your scans ? I’m so so nervous about my 20 week scan next Thursday 😩😩

OP posts:
Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 01/04/2020 23:06

I don’t really get anxious till they put that scanner on then I worry they might find something wrong.
What is it you’re worried about?

GaaaaarlicBread · 01/04/2020 23:09

@Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy got this irrational fear that it’ll be a mmc or something even though I have no reason to feel like that. Every scan I have has been more than perfect and she’s thriving . But because I feel ok I guess it’s making me worry more ?

Congratulations. I think for the nursery all you need is somewhere for baby to sleep, somewhere to store clothes, somewhere to put dirty clothes, somewhere to put bits and bobs like nappies and wipes and somewhere for toys.

We just got a normal chest of draws from Ikea and used the top to change baby rather than buying a separate changing table. We also got a trolley like thing to put nappies, wipes etc in.

I0NA · 02/04/2020 00:53

Yes just change baby on a mat on the chest of drawers. It’s only for a few months anyway. As soon as they start to roll you will want to change them on the floor. Because the second you take both hands of them they will be off that mat, they are like tadpoles.

kittykat7210 · 02/04/2020 01:23

I honestly wouldn’t bother with a changing table, they are expensive and baby’s can roll/shuffle far earlier than you ever anticipate! I have a picture from when my daughter was only 5 weeks old, having shuffled over the top of a cushion I had laid her on, I had only turned my back for about 10 seconds and she’d moved quite far! There are stories of babies managing to roll off beds/changing tables and hurting themselves at only weeks old so I wouldn’t risk it,
Always change baby on a mat on the floor!

ClassicallyConditioned · 02/04/2020 07:07

If you're worried about him rolling off a changing table mat then you can buy ones with really high sides to prevent this - I'm still using mine and DS is 14 months.

AnxiousKerry · 02/04/2020 07:21

Im 25 weeks at the moment. My plan is to wait until 30 weeks and then order some stuff online( which scares me lol). I have most of the stuff together. Just need a Moses basket and changing mat, a few clothes.

Hoping this all dies down before the baby is here.

Amichelle84 · 02/04/2020 07:34

I'm in exactly the same position and am 20 weeks.

I've written a list of things I need to get, what were getting second hand etc. I feel like it's still a bit too early for us to start buying large items, especially as we dont have much room.
I have been keeping an eye on the big money items and bought a compete tommee tippee feeding set down to £75 and a gro egg so far.

I'm glad we dont know the sex, otherwise I think id buy so many clothes.

Also trying to not go too mad incase wages etc get cut.

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 02/04/2020 08:04

@GaaaaarlicBread I think it’s quite normal to feel like that. By now it’s also quite normal to feel well. I paid for two private scans cos I was paranoid the baby wasn’t going to still be there. Thankfully all has been well so far. I have a 26 week scan tomorrow to check growth as I have thyroid problems. Are you going to find out the sex?

GaaaaarlicBread · 02/04/2020 09:30

Changing table wise we have a normal chest of drawers that we have babies vests and little bits in at the mo and just have the mat on top of that?
@Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy we are having a little girl, found out at 16 week private scan 🥰 what are you having ? We have no idea where to store the pram or anything , might have to go in the garage ! We have a good sized house but no hallway, you come straight in and have enough space to take your shoes off etc and bring shopping in but then the stairs are there and living room to the left and kitchen to the right (seated by doors) so can’t store the pram in the hall like a lot of people do. At a loss lol

They’re in your room for the first 6-12 months so a nursery really isn’t necessary until then. They just need somewhere to sleep, nappies and wipes, clothing, a car seat and a pram and/or carrier. The rest may be nice to have but not completely essential.

I0NA · 02/04/2020 13:00

If you don’t have space then don’t buy a pram. Just get a buggy that lies flat So you can use from birth.

People buy too much equipment for babies that they don’t need, it ends up taking over your whole house.

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 02/04/2020 15:56

@GaaaaarlicBread we are also having a girl 😁. We live in a flat and currently have a second hand pram in the hallway, there is nowhere else for it. I think although it’s not essential to have a nursery all ready , as they baby will be in our room for at least six months, for me it’s part of the mental preparation. As I said I’ve found it difficult to accept I’m pregnant, it was unplanned, so for me preparing for the baby is part of acceptance of what going to happen 😬.

A few years back I bought the book 'BabyNomics' by Madeline Thomas. (I got mine for about £1.50 from ebay). Handy tips of what is really necessary for a newborn and what are 'nice to haves'. What can be bought 2nd hand and what you should get new etc. It might be out of date in terms of prices now, but might be useful if you can find a cheap copy.
