Anyone else now suspecting that wine was a significant contributor to their weight problems pre pregnancy? :D

Hey everyone

I am now 15 weeks pregnant and haven't gained any weight.

I always thought food was the reason I could never lose weight but the only change to my diet is that I have cut out alcohol and I think I have more sweet treats but I'm beginning to suspect that I consumed more wine than I allowed myself to admit and that the food choices I'd make while tipsy were clearly worse than the sugar I've added.

Anyone else starting to suspect wine as their main issue not their diet now you've given it up for the first time ever lol???? X

I'm the opposite.

I thought wine was the problem but it's clearly that I just eat too much Grin

redwinefine · 29/03/2020 19:13

YES! absolutely. I lost a stone while pregnant. I ate more (of the right stuff), but completely cut out wine. After baby, I'm such a lightweight though! It's great - such a cheap date now! Good luck with little one. #

Also, you're only meant to be eating 200 more calories in the third trimester so it might come on then.

Meadows89 · 29/03/2020 19:31

31 weeks and still 3lbs under start weight.

I've been thinking the same. I don't think my Friday after work drinks wherever there were 241 cocktails followed by grabbing a maccas in an Uber on the way home did me any favours. Nor did the 'it's Saturday, let's head to the pub for a couple - we'll get food out' or 'f*ck it, it's Sunday and I'm hanging, let's go get a roast and share a bottle of wine or 3'.

I didn't realise all the extra calories I was eating where I was either drunk or hungover Hmm

Spam88 · 29/03/2020 19:45

I'd never thought about it, but maybe that's the real reason the weight piled back on after I stopped breastfeeding...

Mc3209 · 29/03/2020 19:49

Yes! Yes! And Yes! I knew it was calorific before, but I haven't quite realised the extent. I am actually eating more now, especially carbs (keeps the nausea bearable), and haven't gained any weight yet (9 weeks).

SchnauzerPillow · 29/03/2020 20:19

Yes! I am eating way more carbs now also. In fact if I reduced some of the sweet treats I think I'd lose weight.

My minimum would have been a bottle of wine on a Friday night and another one on a Saturday plus eating out. All the home cooking and lack of wine seems to compensate for my dessert after lunch and dinner everyday 🙈😂

In my first pregnancy I lost half a stone in the first trimester, despite eating far more to curb the nausea. I’m convinced it was the lack of wine!

HoffiCoffi13 · 29/03/2020 20:23

I also lost 10lbs once doing dry January so that seems to suggest the wine is the issue Blush

OlivejuiceU2 · 29/03/2020 21:03

Yes! For years I couldn’t shift any weight with diet and exercise but never really held back on the drinking. I’ve lost so much I’m still less than I was pre-pregnancy at 24 weeks. I wasn’t even overweight before just carrying a bit extra.

SnoozyLou · 29/03/2020 22:24

I'm 28 weeks and have put 2 lbs on.

So yes. I have an inkling.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 29/03/2020 22:56

Absolutely!

lauryloo · 29/03/2020 23:13

Yep. I'm 34 weeks and have gained 3lb

Definitely the wine keeping the weight up

windy2909 · 30/03/2020 00:27

Not for me! Avid wine lover who only stopped when pregnant. Gained at least 3.5 stone during pregnancy. However, post birth was losing the weight quite rapidly until I rediscovered my love for wine 🙈

Dollywilde · 30/03/2020 00:32

Definitely for me. I ate pretty well pre pregnancy, probably averaged 1600 balanced cals a day but then wine calories plus bad tipsy food choices over the week averaged me out to more than I should have been having.

Now 21 weeks pregnant and a few of my friends have pointed out the bump has got bigger while everything else has got smaller Smile

Tbh I think this pregnancy has really reset my relationship with alcohol, not that I realised it needed it beforehand!

TripleASays · 30/03/2020 06:11

100% agree. I'm 15 weeks in and 13lbs down😳 I was definitely drinking too much Pinot. I'm so glad that pregnancy has given me a wake up call!

SchnauzerPillow · 30/03/2020 07:41

@Dollywilde @TripleASays

Yes this is how I feel. I really do think I was drinking too much and have had to admit now after nearly 4 months of sobriety I used it to make me feel better and I do think this pregnancy will reassess my relationship with alcohol afterwards.

Now that I am aware of my crutch I can drink more consciously when I am able to. Good luck with everything and thank you for replying xxx

@SchnauzerPillow Flowers I think one real positive is realising you do it. Not that I was really in any doubt about 9 months sober, I knew I wasn’t quite at that level of drinking (I think I figured I’d manage it when it came) but I really wasn’t very good at batting back my ‘ah fuck it’ decision making process to open a bottle when it’d been a good day/stressful day etc because why not? I think my default was ‘what reason not to drink’ whereas it should be ‘what reason TO drink’. I stayed with my parents for a few days last month and realised that they very much have that attitude too, it’s firmly in the bad habit category.

Particularly at the moment with the dreaded C-word, it you told me 6 months ago I’d be managing this kind of stress without a drop of wine I’d have disbelieved you. So I know in future once baby is here when things are stressful I can go ‘I managed a global pandemic sober, I can cope without a glass of wine tonight!’. At least that’s my hope Smile
