First midwife appointment

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has had their first midwife appointment during the lockdown period? I'm due my first appointment on Wednesday where I will be half way into my 9th week (it was the earliest they could fit me in) and I've been told not to attend the doctors and the midwife would contact me. Does this mean she will be coming to the house or will it just be a phone call? All I want is to know that the baby is ok and hear the heartbeat for the first time and I'm just worried it won't happen ☹️

I think it will probably be a phone call (it is in my area now). I'm afraid you wouldn't have heard the heartbeat at this appointment anyway, as it's too early - midwives don't even attempt to listen in at this point. The main point of the first appointment is to get your history (your health, any previous pregnancies etc). They do usually check your urine and your blood pressure, but from what I understand pre eclampsia is vanishingly rare before 20 weeks, so I think it's been decided they can do without these. So it shouldn't be massively different over the phone.

I completely understand your workouts, but a booking appointment would never include hearing the heartbeat - it's much to early to find it with a Doppler - or anything really that tells you about how baby is getting on. That's the kind of thing that your dating scan gives you more information about.

Your first midwife appointment is largely paperwork, so if they do it over the phone then the vast majority of it will be just the same as if it had been face to face.

Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy!

Worries, not workouts! Oops.

Thank you both!! That's very helpful! I only worry because my sisters first pregnancy resulted in blighted ovum so I was hoping the heartbeat would put my mind at rest! Oh well I guess I'll just have to wait then.

Thank you again ❤️

The wait for that first scan is awful!! It's just like an empty abyss whilst time slowly ticks on!! Midwives usually listen to heartbeat at the 25 week appointment so a phone call will be fine at this point. Hopefully your scan comes around quickly for that reassurance!

I have my first scan booked for the 07/04 (IVF baby) I will be 7 weeks then.
And first midwife appointment is 12/04 and I do have to go to hospital for that. Hope they don't cancel.
Husband obv can't come to any of these appointments.

I had my first appointment on Thursday, i am 11 weeks. I had to go to he doctors surgery, although the surgery is closed/only open for midwife appointments. The scanning department at the hospital contacted me the following day to arrange a 12 week scan which is booked for 7th April (nearly 13 weeks).

In my area, I’m doing first ‘ booking’ appointments over phone. Bloods are being taken at scan. We’re only seeing women over 28 weeks pregnant at 2 clinics which remain open. GPs won’t let us have clinics there. Postnatal visits are stopped except day 5 for heel prick test. I’m worried about the poor care we’re going to be giving.
