Dry mouth/extreme thirst

Hi all only 8 weeks pregnant but have found myself with an incredibly dry mouth and extreme thirst in the evenings!

It’s so bad I wake up a few times in the night desperate for a drink but that doesn’t seem to do it and struggle to get to sleep as my throat is so dry (despite me just having had a few sips of water).

It’s really getting me down and interrupting sleep!

Is this normal? I know it’s probably normal to drink more but this extreme has got me thinking it could be GD, would it be possible this early on?

Hiya! I had this aswell. I'm 23 weeks now and I'm not waking so much for a drink at the moment but I remember from 8-12ish weeks I was always desperate for a drink and nothing seemed to help.

If you're worried contact your midwife but when I mentioned it to mine she told me increased thirst is a pregnancy symptom itself. Xx

Yes I have had this also since early pregnancy. Ian now 26 weeks and not as bad but still more thirsty in the evening. I think part of it is you have an increase in how much blood you have circulating so obviously need the water for that.

I had this and it was a symptom of gestational diabetes. I haven’t had it to anything like the same degree in my second pregnancy.

Hi everyone. I am almost 8 weeks pregnant and suffering from extreme tiredness and exhaustion. Im having a good full nights sleep then needing a 2-3hr nap in the day. Is anyone else having this? It is so hard. X

So pleased that others have had this!

It is driving me insane! I am due to see midwife next week so will just mention it and see what she suggests...

Hoping it’s not GD...

I’ve been really thirsty too although I would say it’s getting less now I’m approaching 12 weeks.

I think it’s normal but the urine test the midwife does when you meet her will find out if there’s any underlying reason.

Yep had it in the first trimester too. Drunk so much water and it never felt enough - one night it went to the bathroom 5 times in the space of 2h Confused

I was worried about GD too but the thirst subsided as I got to second trimester and now 25w and had GD test done last week and it came out clear.

It must be a pregnancy thing but it is so weird isn't it! I've always been someone who drinks three litres of water a day without fail so when I was always thirsty I was like how much more drink could I possibly have!!!! I was getting up so much in the night it was making so so tired! 😅 but all better now.

As for the tiredness in the first trimester, it's normal. It's horrible. And to be honest I am better than I was in the first trimester, I have more energy now but it seems to run out fast still. I cleaned the kitchen the other day during isolation and had to have a nap afterwards 🤣🤣 these babies need all our energy.

I had this, it was horrible waking up with bleeding cracked lips because they were so dry!

I found that increasing how much I was drinking in the evening helped, not just having one drink before bed but spreading our several glasses of water over a few hours.

I also had a dentist appointment when I was suffering and they said they can prescribe a mouth wash that helps with dry mouth. I never ended up getting any though.

I had this in the first trimester, was drinking a full litre of water every night. Pretty sure it's normal and nothing to worry about.

It’s just driving me completely insane it makes me feel so ill! I wake myself up snoring and with my dry throat it’s agony!! Lol

Thanks for the reassurance ladies :)
