Baby clothing during lockdown

I am due my first baby in just over a week. My husband and I didn't want to find out the sex of our baby, so we've only bought a few items of clothing just for the first few days - our plan was to order more baby clothes when they arrive and we know their gender, and obviously assumed we'd be getting lots as gifts from family and friends. The situation has now clearly changed. Am I being selfish if I still order some clothes online? Thinking of the people having to pick and deliver the items at this scary time... but we just won't have enough to last us long at all.

You need some clothes. Its not selfish.

Alternatively, if one of you is doing a weekly shop at the supermarket then just get some sleepsuits in from there.

They don't need much as a newborn.

We are in the exact same boat, not just with clothes but with loads of different bits we weren’t worried about not having immediately that we have had to buy in the last few days. Don’t feel guilty about it- these are necessities for a newborn and you don’t want to be scraping around for things when baby is here and not able to get them quickly- this is the view in taken anyway.

LittleBearPad · 25/03/2020 20:20

I think you’ll still get clothes sent to you. However you do need some bits so you could order them all from the same place.

Sexnotgender · 25/03/2020 20:22

I ordered some clothes for my 13 month old today, he needs clothes so I bought them. Can’t really do anything else, unless I stop feeding him so he doesn’t grow!

I'm so glad we were overly prepared and bought most stuff early on now... will try to get by as much as we can on the few items of clothing we have but I will need some more. Perhaps like you've said it's best to just order from one place. What a time to have a baby eh? And clothes is really the least of my worries at the moment!

It's a really tough one - we also are not finding out the gender and I got into a bit of a panic about 3 weeks ago after reading a post that said "at this stage in your pregnancy you'll have everything for the baby ready..." um, no! LOL

But I did go onto facebook marketplace and buy a bundle of newborn boys and girls clothes, so I now have a stock to get me through the first 4-6 weeks. With the CV, you might not be able to get anything second hand as collection can be a bit tricky.

I also subscribed to a new company called Bundlee which is a clothes rental site - I met the owner at the Baby Show and was impressed by the quality. Its about 24 a month and I calculated it to be cheaper than buying from M&S or JL, and the quality is much better. Got the first bundle this week and the clothes are lovely.

Best of luck - only one week to go :) x

H&M is great for brights and unisex stuff if they are still delivering.

CoolNoMore · 26/03/2020 03:55

If people haven't already bought stuff, subtly hint that the baby is on the large size and that the most useful clothes would be in size 3 months and above. If they do get posted or dropped round, you don't need to touch them for a while, people still get to buy presents, and you get to organise yourself. The virus can't last outside of a person (or bat or pangolin or whatever it came from) for more than 72 hours, so leave them a week and you'll be grand. And if you're ordering online, same deal - leave them for a couple of days and then wash them and no virus has any sort of a chance. Eeep, a week to go! I'm jealous!

Next are still delivering online

frillseeking · 26/03/2020 08:19

Same here OP. I was going to happily order from Next and any other companies still delivering online, now I feel like that's not the right thing to do? I thought it would help keep businesses going and help keep delivery drivers in a job but then people are saying it's putting them at risk and it's not essential. Not a big problem with everything else going on but you don't know what to do for right or wrong

JurassicShay · 26/03/2020 08:45

I'm in the same position except it's the pram I haven't bought. Money is tight now dp isn't working and we will need some garden furniture if we're to be in the house for the next few months.

I'm thinking of putting off buying the pram until baby is here in 9 weeks & buy the furniture next week. I don't feel guilty though, if I'm to get through this (ds10 has adhd & needs constant supervision if outside with the other dc) we will need to make the most of outside & I can't sit on the ground forever - struggling to get back up now & a numb bum is not good! You'll need clothes. I'd get sleepsuits and vests from the supermarket as others have said. If you're able to get on, online, I always used to be able to get these through Ocado. They were usually white and grey, with stripes/stars. If not, my next idea would be Next as a PP has said. You will need these things, they're not nice-to-haves.

Sunflower2019 · 26/03/2020 09:54

M&S are still delivering :) I went in Morrisons yesterday for a small shop and some really nice baby bits, I bought a little Sleepsuit, my first buy at 4 months!
All the best, you must be excited!

Whoareyoudududu · 26/03/2020 12:35

I think most places are still delivering, I’ve had a couple of H&M deliveries this week.

Persipan · 26/03/2020 12:47

I'm in a similar position - I ran upstairs on Monday night after Boris's announcement and did a hasty audit of what baby clothes I already have! I've now ordered a couple of bundles of vests etc to supplement the gaps - the upside, I suppose, is that we won't be going anywhere so don't need anything fancy.

Pram/carseat arriving Saturday, and I've also got a few last bits coming (like liners for the second-hand nappy bin someone gave me). Hopefully then I should be set for the immediate present.

The way to look at this, I think, is that not all 'essentials' are food. Sure, for the average person right now, buying clothes is not a necessity - but in this situation, it clearly is. Go ahead and order what you need.

bluemoon2468 · 26/03/2020 14:31

In terms of the ethics of it all - if companies start to go under these people will be out of a job, full stop. I'm sure if you asked the people working in warehouses and delivery jobs they'd say they rather you helped keep them in a job rather than 'supported' them to self-isolate at home, unemployed 😕
