I have got seriously bad heartburn and no sympathy from those around me. Has anyone got any tried and tested remedies I can take/do whilst 7 months pregnant?

Gaviscon wasn't working for me-spoke to my consultant in desparation last week, he told me that they won't give me ranitidine unless I'm bringing up blood, but has prescribed Asilone, which seems to be working so far

I get really bad heartburn too, whenever I eat anything, even healthy stuff. I get through loads of the Rennie Soft Chew and Remegel tablets and they seem to help. I can not stand the gaviscon tablets or liquid they make me heave, I asked the mw and she got me a big bottle of Peptac aniseed flavour which I tend to swig from the bottle. The worst is getting hb at night when trying to sleep, I have managed to combat this by not eating after 5pm, I get all the hb out of the way before I go to bed and so get a much better nights sleep.

During the day I have also found that chewing gum helps

gaviscon liquid. the mw can give you a prescription for a huge bottle

Ranitidine rules! Gaviscon didn't do it for me- drinking a bottle a day and felt awful. It can be tricky to get a script though- my GP was really reluctant to prescribe it even after given to me by consultant obstetrician ( who gives it to all her ladies that need it!). Over the counter its Zantac but StarlightMcK says, you might have to be discreet(sp?) with a husband in need of it!
Good luck

My b/f's hubby is a pharmacist and he says gaviscon is fine. -If you can stomach it!

I have 2 pillows and then wrap my arms arounnd a b/f pillow so I sleep quite upright. I try to drink milk when it starts and only use the gaviscon when it gets really bad. Stay away from spicy foods as it just aggrevates it.

A fellow sufferer here too The pharmacist in Boots told me that they only recommended liquid gaviscon as tablets have a very high sodium content which is not advisable during pregnancy. Indeed there is a warning on the packs about being careful if you are on a low sodium diet etc. However I HATE the taste of aniseed and have since found out that im not that keen on the mint version also! yuck! better than heartburn, but only just... lol!

Gaviscon liquid does the trick for me.
Also drinking milk (either cool or warm in a milky drink like Horlicks) seems to soothe heartburn. Same with a pot of yogurt.
Tried a custard tart yesterday (purely in the name of research and that seemed to do the trick too.
Also, not lying down flat, but using pillows to prop yourself up. And not bending over.

Can you get Tums over there? So far it's worked OK for me, and the extra calcium is a bonus. They come in lots of different artificial flavors, here in the US.

eleusis · 12/09/2007 13:43

I second the tums recommendation. You can get it in the UK. Try boots. You might have to hunt a bit, but it definitely exists.

mumzyof2 · 12/09/2007 17:26

I survived on Fruit Rennies when I was suffering. It got quite unbreable at times. My mum also said sipping slowly on luke warm water or milk helps. Was prescribed gaviscon, but couldnt stomach it

I found ginger tea helped a lot. Grate fresh ginger and soatk it in boiling water. Add a little (or a lot) of the liquid to ordinary tea. Won't give quantities because it's so much a matter of taste, but do try it!

my2weegirls · 13/09/2007 09:11

i suffered really bad from heartburn both pregnancies- the good thing is that as soon as baby is born it disappears!

i used - gaviscon (ended up going through big bottle a week)
love hearts (the sweeties - as they are quite chalky)
milk, custard and yoghurt
avoiding spicey food (which was hard as i love it)
sleeping as upright as possible

hollyhobbie · 13/09/2007 13:52

rennies! rennies! rennies!

Newt · 13/09/2007 14:02

The safest remedies are often the most effective.

Malt extract either a spooful dissolved in hot water..best first thing in the morning, or a spoonful on its own. You can buy it in a jar from health food shops. Waitrose sometimes stock it too.

Worked for me, I got terrible heartburn and morning sickness until I discovered this.

honestly you cant beat gaviscon (until/unless you become immune!)

i didnt like the taste with my 1st pregnancy and suffered so bad trying rennies and milk etc but it just wasnt enough...

with ds2 i made myself get used to gaviscon (though i could only stomach the peppermint one) and i am suprised my son wasnt born covered in it!

this time i can only stomach the aniseed gaviscon.. how bizarre ay?! but again i couldnt be without it... it is prescribed by MW's and GP's and is safe during pregnancy (says on bottle!)... i carry a bottle everywhere with me and have one in the bedroom and one down stairs...!

Hi, if you're looking for a natural remedy then try eating a handful of grapes every time you feel it starting. I know it seems mad but really it does work!!!.Good Luck
