Midwife said Drs need to look at my chest/lungs?

Hi all,

I'm 11 weeks 5 days and have my dating scan next week.

During my booking appointment a couple of weeks ago, my midwife said I needed to make a doctors appointment for them to look at my chest. I can't remember why exactly she said it but I think she said something about pregnancy can affect your lungs and it has to be done before 14 weeks. I THINK this is what she said but can't remember (I was in there for 2 hours!).

Anyway, due to covid19, my doctors surgery has written to me saying they've cancelled all appointments and I need to ring up on the day to get an appointment.

Do I HAVE to go in? I'd rather not waste the doctors time if it's unnecessary, and it's not something I've every heard of before (and my pregnant friends haven't been told this either, but they are in different NHS trusts to me).

To clarify, I have no underlying health problems and no problems with my chest. I did smoke but quit 3 and a half years ago.

Thanks guys :) x

I've never heard of it either.
You could get a telephone appointment and ask the doctor it's about.

Never heard of it. Is this because you have an underlying health condition? If just a precaution I'd say probably no need to stress over it

@maria2bela no I have no underlying health conditions at all. Strange isn’t it.

I’m a community midwife and that’s not ringing any bells really...
Did you mention having been breathless or anything like that? We are very very sensitive about potential cardiac conditions and will ask women to get an ECG if they mention certain symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness etc.

I had it. A heart and lung check to be done after 15 weeks. Something my midwife told me to book with my Dr. My Dr was very confused and said I was the second person who had been sent to her for one but she hadn’t ever heard of it! I have no health issues, was told it was standard! Still not sure why and neither was the Dr! X

@Bienentrinkwasser no I have nothing of the sort at all. In fact I’m pretty sure I said I have absolutely 0 prior health conditions at all. Bizarre.

@Mummyspider27 how bizarre!! I’ll give the doctors a ring and see what they say. I’m sure she told me it had to be done before 14 weeks, the appointment I made was for tomorrow and that would be 12 weeks exactly.

After you said you were an ex smoker, did she do a peak flow where you blow into something and she writes down a number?
Did she do your observations more than once and say anything about your pulse rate etc?

rddnll · 27/03/2020 09:18

@h1ghC0r0na no she didn't do peak flow. My blood pressure was perfect. Bizarre. I'll give the doctors a ring now and see what they say.

I'm a midwife who works in the community and on delivery suite, can't think of a single reason why that would be a thing for someone with no underlying conditions, who feels well!

mineofuselessinformation · 27/03/2020 09:24

I think you need to call your midwife and ask her to clarify what she meant.
