Consultant appointment

I am currently 28 weeks and consultant led due to a previous LLETZ procedure and gestational diabetes risk. At my hospital (New Cross) I haven’t seen the same consultant each time but instead you see whichever doctor is on duty. I’ve now had 3 cervical scans and all have come back that my cervix is holding the pregnancy well. At two of the scans the consultants (and my midwife) explained that in the third scan I would be discharged back to the community midwife if the results were satisfactory and on the condition that there was no gestational diabetes.

The third consultant I saw after the last scan told me everything was holding very well and that he just wanted to see me once more. He has been the only one not to give me a copy of the results to take away so I do feel a bit in the dark about what that means. I asked if I needed another scan as he needed to see me again and he said no, we will just need to look at the gestational diabetes results after you have had the test.

I have now had the tests and the results have come back that I do not have gestational diabetes and a normal reading. I don’t particularly want to travel over to the hospital to be told this in person or just to have my blood pressure taken. Wolverhampton has had many cases of corona virus and not to mention it is a train and bus ride away taking me 1 hour 30 minutes or an expensive 30 minute taxi ride each way. It seems to be an unnecessary risk in the current situation.

I wasn’t happy when I last attended with the way the safety precautions were. The receptionist asked me if I was well with a cough but on sitting down there were many women coughing and there was no sanitiser when I arrived. I also observed people not sanitising when it was available. It was a very uptight couple of hours waiting!

My point is AIBU to cancel and can I ask to be discharged back to my community midwife now all high risk factors have been eliminated as the consultant and midwife told me I would be? The receptionist has been very unhelpful simply stating I’m advised to attend if I’m well. But the thought of the public transport journey and the hospital is really worrying me if all they are going to do is give me the all clear and do my observations. I have a midwife appointment coming up anyway for those. The only thing that I would want to attend for is to request a copy of my last results. Any advice would be appreciated.

I do not think you’re be unreasonable, and you can decline consultant appointments anyway if you don’t want to be seen by them. As long as you are being cared for by your midwife and having all the usual scans, appointments etc then that is okay.

I would ask fir a telephone consult instead as it essentially sounds like they are about to discharge you back to midwifery anyway.

Personally I wouldn't want to go to the hospital either. Lots of routine appointments are now being done by phone or Skype so ask for this or call your midwives if the receptionist can't help.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy must be really difficult being pregnant right now Thanks

I think I will cancel then. Weighing everything up it seems unnecessary and I’m surprised they haven’t initiated phone appointments where possible. I’ll still attend my midwife appointments.

Thanks for your kind words. It’s certainly worrying especially being a first pregnancy. Had a few nights waking up and overthinking!
