GP told me I had UTI but I didn’t, will unnecessary antibiotics harm the baby?

So long story but I went to the hospital today as I was struggling to have a wee and was unsure if it was related to a UTI I recently had.

The doctor there checked my records and said my last two urine samples from this month were actually clear and I never had a UTI and he doesn’t know why I was prescribed antibiotics. He did another sample to confirm no infection.

When I expressed how confused and concerned I was he just said he didn’t really know how they’d told me that as my results were clearly negative and to call them to complain, but he said they could have read my results from a time when I DID actually have a UTI in January.

I was checked by my MAU after and baby’s heartbeat was fine, but im really worried this could have harmed him as I didn’t need antibiotics :(

I have my 20 week scan next Thursday, I’m just so worried as I have anxiety and I never know if I’m over reacting but I’m really annoyed.

No they won’t harm your baby because I’m sure you’ll have been given antibiotics which are safe to take in pregnancy.

As the doctor you saw today “didn’t really know how they’d told you that” he clearly doesn’t know the full story and it’s therefore irresponsible and unprofessional of him to tell you to complain.

I think from what you’ve said that the antibiotics you were prescribed earlier this month were prescribed by your GP. And I’m deducing from this that when you had the sample checked there with the stick it did suggest you had a UTI and were therefore prescribed antibiotics. But the sample they then sent to the lab didn’t grow any bacteria ie was clear and showed no infection. The lab samples take around 48 hours to get a result from, so if you had symptoms of a UTI and the dipstick test your doctor did in the surgery suggested a UTI then it’s entirely understandable why you were given antibiotics there and then rather than waiting 2-3 days for the result of the lab sample.

Hi @Nestofvipers yes that’s right the GP prescribed me the antibiotics recently. What you’ve said makes a lot more sense, thank you for explaining it that way.

I’ve been in a total flap for hours as the doctor seemed really concerned at the hospital tonight about why I was taking antibiotics when I didn’t have a UTI and then referred me to the MAU to get checked out immediately so I assumed something was wrong and my anxiety went into overdrive 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m glad to be of help and am pleased to hear your baby is ok.

The doctor you saw at the hospital will almost certainly have only been able to see the lab result of your urine, but not the dipstick result done by your GP and the one on the basis of which you were treated.

I am a GP and from what you have said, I think I’d have done exactly as your GP did. Hope your 20 week scan goes well.
