What should baby sleep in?

My baby is due early May. What's the best thing for them to sleep in, both to wear and as a blanket? Is a cellular blanket going to be too hot at that time of year? Thank you!

The Lullabye Trust has good guidelines for safe sleeping on their website. I had a gro egg thermometer and used the gro company sleeping bags which come with a guide as to what to put the baby in depending on the room temperature. At the moment my son’s room is around 16-18 degrees so he has a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag.

Thanks Darkstar. Is a thermometer to check room temperature a must then?

It's not a must. (Billions of babies survived without thermometers in their rooms). A common rule of thumb is that baby should have on one more layer than you.

Hi wondering,

Some baby monitor display the room temperature on the receiver. We bought grobags but our baby actually prefers being swaddled in a cellular blanket. Cellular blankets are considered very good for regulating heat - you will get bonus points from the health visitor if they see you are using one. :)

I had a may baby, I found cellular blankets and also pram sheets really useful to layer up.
Also vests and baby grows. We had a heat wave when dc was 6 weeks old used just a vest in the day and baby grow no vest at night. So light layers that you can build up.
You usually need one more layer than your wearing.
