I don’t have any clothes for life with newborn

I went through my wardrobe yesterday and all I have are my old clothes - mostly tight jeans, tops and fitted dresses that I highly doubt I’ll get back into for a few months after the birth - and my maternity wear, which will all be too big.

I’m especially worried that I don’t have anything at all to wear for discreet EBF - the tops I have would literally have to be taken off in order for me to BF!

What are the best clothes to buy for life with a newborn and will I even be able to get anything now if all the shops are shutting down?

Also because my belly is so big, I won’t be able to tell whether stuff I buy will fit my post-birth body and am worried about wasting loads of money on clothes that are the wrong size.

Help!

You can buy both baby clothes and maternity clothes on line, you don’t need to visit shops.

Hush joggers? Harem pants?

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 20/03/2020 08:09

Given that you’re not going to be going out and about and socialising then I’d get some lounge/yoga/harem trousers in one size larger than your pre-pregnancy size, a few big unfitted T shirts and a jumper or two (under the circs could you borrow your DP’s T-shirts and jumpers until your size has settled down a bit?)

Get some nursing vests from h&m and stick them under your normal tops. Then your stomach is covered.

wondering7777 · 20/03/2020 08:11

Nursing vests, thank you - see I didn’t even know there was such a thing!

I wonder if all these shops that are closing will still be selling online? I hope so!

I just wore standard cheapie strappy vests under any old t-shirt.

Pulled the vest down under breast and t-shirt up enough to access nipple.

Only nursing thing I had was a bra!

Given the current guidelines of social distancing, I dont think discreetly EBF is an immediate concern.

Have a look on ASOS or Monki. Seraphine also has a great nursing (and good quality) selection. All are still delivering.

DaffodilSunshine · 20/03/2020 08:18

I agree with nursing vests and any normal loose-ish top over them. Then you can pull the vest down and the top layer up. Gives a lot more flexibility than having breastfeeding specific tops and still just as discreet

Also, stretchy exercise bra things are great for sleeping in!

Your maternity stuff may fit for a month or so after birth as you might not ping back immediately (not a negative thing at all!) or you may just find slouchy stuff more comfortable.

True Sad But I want to be able to sit in the front room or garden at home without my boobs on full display to the neighbours!

Do you have any friends or colleagues who have had babies fairly recently? My maternity and post maternity stuff has now been to at least three friends and a colleague. Good to see it getting used.

I stayed in my maternity jeans for several months after I gave birth, even though I was back to my pre-baby size...they were very comfortable!

Join the facebook group Can I Breastfeed in it? Loads of good ideas on the type of clothes you can wear that isn't maternity but still allows for bf-ing. Generally look for wrap, zip or button styles or you can wear a nursing vest under any top that you can pull up from the bottom. For your bottom half, buy some leggings and looser style trousers in maybe a size up from your usual. You'll most likely still have a bump as it deflates in the first couple of weeks, then the extra weight starts coming off. I never lost all the weight from my first but lost all the baby weight from number 2 in 3 months. Go for comfort over style and be mindful that if you do need a c section you will need clothes that don't cling or rub over the incision.

RingaRosie · 20/03/2020 08:27

I’ve bought some clothes in a size bigger for after the birth. Loose shirts I can open. High-waisted leggings. I’ll also wear my mid-pregnancy maternity wear.
SIL passed me on her vests with the click-y straps. And I have a few soft bra tops. H&M stuff is good quality for the price. Also, loose shapes / shirt dresses are in for summer.

Why? You don’t need one with special openings, just lift them up from the bottom. Where baby is lying covers your belly, you don’t need your full boobs out.

SinkGirl · 20/03/2020 08:29

I bought great stretchy nursing bras and vests from H&M which fitted through the various ups and downs 😂

ASOS have some great stuff - I had jumpers and t shirts that sort of overlapped at the front for easy access with a vest top underneath. I was double pumping rather than breastfeeding and that’s not easy to do discreetly however!

Wheredidthebackboobscomefrom · 20/03/2020 08:32

I wore loose new look crop tshirts with vest tops under and made the straps of vests longer so I could pop baby under tshirt and get boob out without anyone seeing. Bonus that I can still wear them after I've stopped bfing.

NoddingTulip · 20/03/2020 08:36

I wore yoga pants, harem, joggers or leggings with a nursing vest and then either an oversize shirt (or borrowed on of dhs) or a long cardi for the first few weeksmonths after dc. You will be comfy and be able to brest feed easily but the shirt/cardi will give you some cover if you feel the need to be more discreet..... although once you get the hang of it you will be so quick people wont notice or you'll just stop caring what others think!

Megan2018 · 20/03/2020 08:39

Loads of loose tshirts and vest tops to go under. I get thrown up on a lot so can get through 2-3 a day sometimes.

I have had long sleeved up until now but will soon buy some short sleeved for Summer.

I bought nursing vests but hate them, prefer nursing bra with normal vest.

I did buy a couple of slightly smarter nursing tops from NEXT for going out which have been great too.

I lost all the weight in weeks (not a boast, I had GD and didn’t gain much at all, was all baby) so technically back in my previous clothes inc jeans very quickly but actually bought some looser bottoms too as so uncomfy with all the sitting you do otherwise.

5zeds · 20/03/2020 08:41

Just get some muslins and wear your normal clothes. Maternity work for a fair while because you don’t go back in immediately.
Your neighbours won’t be looking in because they will be n their own homes. You can sit with your back to the windows.
