Coronavirus: Is anyone else telling their boss they're pregnant before 12 weeks/first scan?

Hi all, I'm around 9 weeks pregnant and I was wondering if any of you are discretely telling your boss that you're pregnant early in order to ensure you can work from home/make other allowances in light of the government guidance? I'm just really nervous about telling my boss before I've had my first scan, I haven't even told any family yet! I am currently allowed to work from home but I'm expected on a training course next week and my boss keeps suggesting we meet in the office for a meeting or two which I really don't want to do as it's all making me very anxious.

I did tell my boss early, at 8 weeks,
I had very bad morning sickness so had to tell them, but I'm glad I did because they've been very good since the virus has really kicked off

Good luck with your pregnancy!

I’ve had to - I’m a teacher and it’s not exactly like there’s the option to work from home really. She’s actually known since 7 weeks as I had to leave work to go to the EPU but now I’m 10 weeks and am off work due to government guidelines other people at work do know, it’s been unsettling as I wasn’t ready to share yet but it had to be done to protect myself and the baby.

I'm in exactly the same boat, scan is next week (if it goes ahead) but I'm tempted to tell them early....I just dont know

Also what's peoples thoughts on potential redundancies, do we have any more protection being pregnant?

Hfarm1 · 19/03/2020 15:04

Do you think scans will be cancelled? I was under the impression that things like 12 weeks scans are too important to cancel because of necessary screenings etc that need to happen at certain weeks. Mines on the 7th April and I've been counting down the days!

@Indigogirl88 as far as I'm aware, being pregnant doesn't protect you from redundancy and as long as they're not discriminating due to the pregnancy then you're treated like any other employee

I'm just over 5 weeks pregnant, I found out less than a week ago.

My role covers HR and we were putting contingency plans in place this week. My boss (who is the Chief Exec) asked me to make him aware of anyone that's pregnant because he wanted to ensure they worked from home, so I had to tell him.

To be honest, I'm disappointed that the first person I told was him. I haven't even spoken to my parents or seen a GP/ midwife yet... Day three of working from home and I already have cabin fever and so much anxiety around the pregnany and having to stay at home on my own. (OH still at work).

Does anyone have any advice on how long it takes the midwife to get in touch once a self-referal form has been sent? I think I'll feel better once I've seen someone.

Hfarm1 · 19/03/2020 19:31

@Selina0792 I didn't have to do a self referral form, I saw a nurse for about 5 minutes two weeks after calling the surgery. The midwife called me two days after that to book my booking appointment about 3 and a half weeks later. I was super anxious about everything before I saw the midwife at the booking appointment and she made me feel so much better!

Oh ok... I rang the Doctors and the receptionist told me I didnt need to see a Doctor, I just needed to go on the NHS website and fill out a form. I did it on Monday. Hope they call me soon!

sarahc336 · 19/03/2020 20:19

I had to as I work for the nhs, I'm only 5 weeks too, normally I'd wait but with the situation being so important I told them. They can't support you unless they know xx

Selina0792 · 19/03/2020 21:19

I completely agree. It's important that he knows. I'm the person in the organisation that everyone should let know if they're pregnant!

I just didn't expect the first person to know, or to talk to, to be my boss! Not what I imagined Smile x

Selina0792 · 19/03/2020 21:30

@Hfarm1 I think you need to do what's best for you and your baby. Better that your boss knows and you can take the necessary precautions than getting poorly. It's not the ideal situation, but better to make sure you and baby are ok. Take care x
