Underactive thyroid in early pregnancy - help!

Hopefully someone can help me with a bit of thyroid advice?
I’m currently almost 5 weeks pregnant after over 2 years of TTC and a MMC 18 months ago. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid (TSH of 7.4) in November last year after pushing for it to be tested and prescribed 50 mcg of levothyroxine. My TSH dropped to 2.75 by January and I felt a lot better.
I got it tested again last week with a view to getting it below 2.5 for IVF but then two days later found out I had conceived naturally. I spoke to my GP today as I thought my dose would need to be increased, but he said no, it’s ‘fine’. When I asked for the figures he said it was 1.77. I asked when I should have it retested and he ummed and aahed and in the end said 10 weeks, but it felt a bit like he was plucking a figure out of the air. The more research I do, the more I think this doesn’t sound right? I thought the pregnancy would cause TSH to increase, so you need an increase in levothyroxine to keep it steady? And thyroid advice online seems to say it should be tested more like every 4 - 6 weeks in early pregnancy.
Any advice on whether I should try and get a second opinion would be good. I find my GP dismissive but I have a midwife appointment in ten days, so maybe it’s worth waiting and discussing with her? Sorry for the essay!

My endocrinologist told me that they should always up your dose of levothyroxine in pregnancy by 25-30%. He said the moment I knew I was pregnant I should arrange a blood test and get the dosage upped as soon as possible. I'd definitely week for a second opinion.
Good luck!

I'm on my second pregnancy with under active thyroid. It's essential to get tested immediately on finding out and again every 4-6 weeks. My TSH was over 100 when I was diagnosed, was under control quickly and then I fell pregnant immediately. My GP upped my dose the day I got a positive test by 25mcg and then it's been assessed every 4-6 weeks and tweaked as needed. It's best to take it into your own hands and lead your GP in what you expect. Some GPs are dismissive of it, but it's vital in the first trimester to keep your TSH as close to 1 as possible. Good luck!

My TSH was 3.2 At my initial ivf consultations and was brought down to 1.3 before starting ivf starting on 25mg then upped to 50mg. The day after I found out I was pregnant my TSH was 3.9 and my Levothyroxine was increased to 75mg. 4 weeks after my last test and my TSH is now 2 but I’m continuing on 75mg. I have been told to test every 4 weeks by the ivf clinic although my gp is completely unconcerned because my TSH is “normal” but then again a gp doesn’t seem to get a red flag unless it’s above 10 and many aren’t completely on the ball with trying to keep it below 2.5. Luckily my gp is happy to go off my clinics recommendations, communicated via me.

If your go won’t test more regularly I have been doing my own at home through medichecks 😊

Hey, I'm currently 15 weeks and have an interactive thyroid. My doctor put my dose down just before we found out I was pregnant (As TSH was 0.5) I get a blood test every 4 weeks and it was only last week he put my dose up as my levels went straight up to 2.5, which I'm worried about. I'm a bit worried as he's only put it up by 75mcg per week which I don't feel is enough, so going for another test this week. I really think you should put your foot down and see someone else if they've told you to wait 10 weeks for another test as thats way too long!

Thanks everyone, it’s helpful to hear your experiences and it sounds like I’m not being overly cautious! I will push for it to be tested again 4 weeks on from my last test, even if means requesting a different GP. Good luck for your result this week @Harry87
I’m quite tempted by medichecks @DobbieFreeElf though I think I would end up checking myself for everything out of curiosity!
Thanks again everyone Smile
