Smoking :(

I'm currently 7wks and 3days and trying to stop smoking!! It's been so hard as I've been smoking for 6 years but for the past few days I've got down immensely (from 10/15 to 1-2 a day). My mum was a heavy smoker with me and my younger sister but we both turned out completely fine. I feel so guilty but the stress of becoming a young single parent isn't really helping :/. I heard cold turkey isn't healthy and doesn't work for everyone as I have tried myself. If any mothers would care to share their experience, would be appreciated!!! Xx

Being pregnant should be enough to make you stop. Not helpful advice, but seriously, just stop. The very least you could have done by now is swith to a vape.

You've done really well to cut down to 1-2!

My Mum was a heavy smoker and was advised in 2005 not to go cold turkey but to cut down gradually.

Speak to your midwife ASAP and see why advice they can offer. I appreciate it's not as easy as 'just stopping' for some people.

I used to smoke but as this was a planned pregnancy decided to give up when trying to become pregnant. Luckily for me I can just stop but it is an addiction. Try patches (if they're safe for pregnancy) or chewing gum but definitely speak to the midwife. Or pop into a pharmacy as they may be able to help.

Well done on cutting down as quickly and as much as you have though. You can do this!!

Hiya! I was a smoker before pregnancy and found it tough during first couple of weeks (had a puff or two of 1 a day) and then just went completely cold turkey. There was no better feeling to smell a second-hand cigarette and feel sick from it!! Just go cold turkey, there's no risk of coming down slowly it's what people try to justify when they want to keep smoking (believe me- I researched myself as was craving haha). You'll probably go back to social smoking after you've had the baby though if friends are smokers (annoyingly!) but just so long as none during pregnancy or around baby you're fine x

If you've cut down to 1-2 then you can stop more easily now. Cut down to 1 now then none next week.
Of course speak to your midwife if you have one.
If you haven't seen one yet when they see you they will do a co2 reading.
Just think (may not be helpful now) every-time you take a toke your baby is fighting harder for breathe.

You've done really well to cut down as much as you have, keep going! It's not really helpful to say you and your sister are fine , that's obviously great news but there will be plenty more people who have health issues from their mothers smoking in pregnancy, a lot more is known about it now than a few years ago.
I have never smoked so don't have any useful tips, but you've done brilliantly to cut down, see if you can drop it to one a day for a while, then stop it completely. Your midwife may also be able to help, I remember being given leaflets when I was pregnant with services you could be referred to.

I set myself a target to stop completely by the end of the 1st trimester. I did it and I haven't looked back. Just keep cutting down and set yourself a target. You can do it!

Hi! I smoked 10-15 a day until the day I found out just over a week ago. I still have times where I feel I really want to smoke (to the point i smell the unlit cigarettes I still have!) but I always think me deciding to smoke is not MY choice anymore, everything I put into my body will effect my baby and smoking narrows blood vessels so can increase miscarriage risk, it's just not worth the risk when that risk is not just yourself anymore.

You've done really well cutting down, just keep going you can do this!! 💪🏽

I was a smoker for 8 years, and I didn't think I would ever be able to quit. A friend recommended a book called Alan Carrs easy way to stop smoking. I read the book, and haven't smoked or craved a single cigarette since. I couldn't believe it, I didn't expect it to work! After I read it, my partner read it and also quit smoking, with no cravings/ withdrawals. Now I recommend it to anyone looking to quit. Go and read the reviews, you can buy it cheap as chips on ebay and amazon :) Best thing I ever did, wish I'd done it sooner.

You have done really well to cut down by that much already. A friend told me - imagine a baby in a big glass bottle and just imagine that bottle being filled with tobacco smoke. How would the baby react ? It would cry and cough and struggle for breath
Now try and smoke. Turned me right off it.
